A Golf Story I'm Actually Interested In
I heard this on the news last night, and thought I'd find a link...
For those that don't like to click on links, yesterday on a Spacewalk one of the Russians decided to hit a golf ball.
"The ball was struck toward Earth, but because it and the space station are whizzing around the planet at a speed of more than 17,000 mph (27,300 kilometers per hour), its trajectory won't be straight down. Rather, it will follow a gradually decaying orbit.
NASA predicts the ball will re-enter Earth's atmosphere in three days — traveling a little more than a million miles (1.8 million kilometers) in the process. Russian controllers told Tyurin that the ball might stay up for four days."

Who'd have thought that something in orbit would continue to orbit

In space, no-one can hear you scream "Fore!"

Although this would probably have taken place in the upper atmosphere where there's still a significantly larger particle density than in a supposed vacuum.

Re: A Golf Story I'm Actually Interested In
I'll be impressed when he gets a hole in one :P
It says the ball is a foam/rubber compound but I would expect it to burn up in the atmosphere before it ever had chance to touch the ground.
On unrelated news, I don't mean to hijack the thread but I thought it was too trivial to start a thread of it's own. I noticed this link on the same news site relating to a Russian spy that thought he had been poisoned. I'm out of touch with the world but does this sort of thing really happen? sounds too much like a plot out of James Bond, I thought we were in an era that was past this sort of cloak and dagger stuff.

Would it still count as one shot?

As I understand it until the ball comes to rest it's all part of the same shot.
The interesting part is with the rule of play it as it lay should it happen to come to rest on a passing 747.

I think the only certainty is that it will do better than the americans at the ryder cup.

No such thing as absolute rest, physics ruins golf

That's what the radio built in to his helmet is for.
However, I'm saddened that anyone would not see that my comment was made in pure jest, and I give you the 'Captain Obvious' award for today.

So if your ball burns up in the Earth's atmosphere would you treat that as a lost ball? Or could you consider the entire planet a water hazard?

well if the ball is simply unplayable then you take a drop penalty, in space though that could end up just about anywhere.

Re: A Golf Story I'm Actually Interested In
If he wouldn't of shanked it towards the Earth when he hit it, there was the possibility it would've stayed up for a much longer time, say in the weeks to years category versus the 3-4 day category.
Now all we need to do is get one of the other guys up there to hit another one and see if we can break his record.
