Let's colonise Mars!
I've been wondering, about making Mars livable.
Getting the atmosphere right shouldn't be a problem, apart from the fact that it would take a looooooong time to get enough oxygen going. What I can't seem to figure out is the whole gravity problem. After all, we were built to live on Earth, where gravity is a lot higher. How do you make it so that gravity is the same on Mars as it is here?

Cut a big chunk out of it?
Edit: That's what you get for not reading things.
How about cutting a big chunk out of another planet and sticking it on?

Without an artificial gravity generator, you dont.
More importantly, I hear that wind storms of 500mph+ occur all over the planet sporadically, dont think we'd be able to accomodate those conditions above ground even if there was oxygen. Not to say that an atmosphere would change the conditions but it would be hard to predict.

all we need to do is melt all that ice in the core with all that old alien technology that they very kindly left for us.
i cant see gravity being a problem at all

Wouldn't our muscles and bones atrophy if we were in a low gravity environment for too long?
Woudn't we also snap like a twig if we stayed on Mars for ten years and then came back to Earth?
Seems like a problem to me

Yes. With enough preasure at average height on mars as we have on sea level on earth, mars will have significantly less weather than us. Adding oceans will mean a bit more wind, but still less than on earth.

Trouble is, you can't give mars an atmosphere.
It would all be ripped away by the solar wind.

Yeah, I've thought of that too.
Are they going to have to turn Mars into a giant green house or something? That's a lot glass.

Well if we can't live there, we could always use it to test nukes on. Or fire our trash there.

what is the point of testing nukes there? and it is easier to fire trash into the sun, but then it is also easier to recycle it considering the amount of rocketry and fuel that would have to be consumed getting there.
If there is much water, mars would still be a convenient place for life. Granted you would have to keep topping the atmosphere up, but there are plenty roids out there to do that with.
MrL: would the ablation process be slow or quick? I'm not too sure tbh.

Why colonize Mars, Jupiter is much bigger.
Think of how low real-estate prices could be there, everyone could have a huge garden for almost no cash at all.
I expect gardening tools to be the #1 growth-market of the future.

well it is a tad windy and the air pollition is rather unpleasent. not only that but it's too cold and you would be crushed to a pulp instantly.
