LOL.

My dad used my PC - I told him to shut it down. He pulled the plug out because he thought shutdown would delete windows...

My parents are like that. They normally ask me why the computer is going slow and how to use certain programmes, like MSN.

The worst thing about it, my parents have worked with computers for nearly 30years. They just can't work a simple desktop pc.

My mother is better with computers than my dad, but she still thinks that empty harddisk space is directly related to the speed of the machine.

Hehe. The computers they started with where pretty massive, I guess. and might have had the awesome amount of 1MB RAM.

I remember the first cell phone my fathe got from the hospital back in the 80ies. A briefcase weighing maybe 9kg...nearly gave him a hernia dragging that around all the time.

And anyways what matters isn't how long you've been working with computers, it's how young you are when you first get exposed to them.
I know 12 year old boys who know far more about computers than 20-odd year old guys. That includes my little brother...
I don't think memory capacity was expressed in Megabytes 30 years ago.
Heck, 30 years ago, they we're still "de-bugging"* computers with insecticide.

* Did you know, that the term "debugging" comes from the early days of computing, when actual bugs (as in insects) caused computer failures by causing short circuits. They would get in the computer and crawl over the PCB touching the lines on the card with their little legs. I've seen my share of pictures of fried roaches on old PCB's in some books.

the first computer bug was a dead moth in a valve (the things they had in the days before transistors) and was discovered by some american Admiral (i forget her name)

Exclamation Re: Parents + computers = Bad

The story that the usage of 'bug', 'debug' and/or 'debugging' originated due to insects in early computers is an urban legend. There are some documented instances of insects causing problems in early computers, but the term 'bug' as applied to machine glitches dates back to the 1800s.

Re: Parents + computers = Bad

i'm afraid he's right

the idea that 'bug' = insect is also flawed

bug meaning insect is an american usage, while the expression 'this machine has a bug' is originally english and derrived from the inductrial revoltution

it actually meant bug as in 'an illness' or sickness.

I've done that a couple times. Also, I often turn my laptop off instead of on because the screen turns off to save power and the power light is hard to see in daytime. I've never got too worried about losing lots of work though. I use autosave.

when my parents started working in computing they did most the programming via punch cards etc. The work for one of the largest insurance companies in the UK and manage their databases. It used to be the largest database in Europe, until someone made a bigger one. I don't know if it was size as in amount of space it takes up in a room or computing size suppose anyone could make a massive computer...

I'll ask my parents about the insect thing, i really doubt that insects ever had an effect on computers.

You didn't read the link Tactitus pasted did you?

I am also unsure how a comment on moths being found on computers relates to insects being called bugs. If anything surely that is just an argument for why the computer process is called debugging, which was disproved in that link, than an argument for the insect usage.

That's quite a popular A-level textbook. I didn't know it had anything about bugs in though

Re: Parents + computers = Bad

If you're interested in the origins of true debugging, then the 'manual' they wrote for the EDSAC (WWG) is quite interesting. It was essentially the first stored-program computer, and the first-time that offline debugging using memory-dumps and tracing was used.

Re: Parents + computers = Bad

The first home micro computer my Dad got was an Sinclair ZX80 (I think?) My brother and I where in awe. 1KB RAM. Pile of sh*t, and it broke down. Dad then got a ZX81 which was better with 16k RAM. Could play some primitive games with it. Which was good Oh, and by the way; I did a GCE "O" level in `puters studies in 1982. Not Many comprehensive schools had computers in those days. I`m still thick with computers to this day :/

DId you know that this is an urban legend and that the term 'bug' was being used as far back as the 1800s about mechanical failures?

I stand corrected then. My source was an O-reilly book (I think, or another book) I had in school with pictures of fried bugs on PCB. I thought it was a funny thing and I remembered it when writing that reply.

When I have customers on the phone, and tell them to make a "backup" of the database, I have to explain to them how to open the file explorer, and what copy and paste is.
I'm still not sure if it's the customers fault for not knowing those simple things, or if I have to make it easier for them to make a "backup".

The problem with using a computer does not always reside between the keyboard and chair. Think of it, people are expected to have a tonne of knowledge. We have to know how to pay bills, how to fill out tax forms, how to drive a car, how to cook and buy food, we have our jobs that require lots of knowledge. Add to that a technologically advanced machine and a vast knowledgebase required to operate it, and for a lot of people it's just too much.

I laugh (and curse) at "stupid" accountants because they have no bloody idea how to retrieve their e-mail, and I bet those same "stupid" accountants laugh at me because I have no idea how to do any bookkeeping.

Re: Parents + computers = Bad

I don't think amount of knowledge is the problem.

One of my mothers friends asked if I could "fix her email".

It turned out she was no longer getting it because she had changed ISPs.

I set her up with a web based email thing, and showed her how to get into her email.

I left her detailed instructions ("Double-left click on the item on the desktop called "Internet Explorer", it's a blue icon with a circle round it").

Two days later, I got a phone call from my mother saying that her friend couldn't get into her email (AT ALL).

I gave up.
