[GB] Surnames

Kind of a follow on from Tomkat's thread about being unique...

You can see how far your surname has spread about the country:
http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/Surnames.aspx

Unsuprisingly for me my surname originates from Durham. Which is where my dad is from.
So mostly found in Durham in 1881, mostly found in Durham in 1998.
it's spread out a little since 1881 with people all over the country pretty much now.

Apparently there were less than 100 people with my mums name in 1998 so I can't chart that.

Very interesting

Re: [GB] Surnames

My surname originates in Bristol, which I kind of knew anyway.
It has spread through the South West of the UK since then, but not a considerable amount.
My Dads surname however isn't on there as there were less than 100 people with it in 1998. This doesn't surprise me as my Grandfather on that side came over to this country from Serbia sometime after WW2.

Re: [GB] Surnames

Unsurprisingly Thomas is easily the most common in south Wales though it has spread to to the Midlands area.

Didn't see where it said the surname originates from, though on both dates it has been most common in Swansea.

Re: [GB] Surnames

Hicks started off in the South West (Cornwall) and has spread up towards Bristol and South Wales. My mother's maiden name (Orders) was quite interesting, in 1891 it was only found in South East Wales (Gwent and its Valleys) strongly and a little bit in Cambridgeshire, now there isn't enough of them left to be anywhere

There needed to be at least 100 people with the name on the Electoral Register in 1998 to be in the database. .

Re: [GB] Surnames

I was going to blog about that site.

Linehan is obviously of Irish descent and mainly focused in London.

The best thing was realising there's one Jew, two African's and two Chinese people called Linehan.

Internationally, I think the place I'd meet most other Linehan's would be Cork (where I'm related to some of them I think) and Massachussets (I understand there's quite a few 'Southies' with the name).

Re: [GB] Surnames

Dads surname, Bloor
In 1881, West midlands/just south of liverpool and a few in rest of midlands/north wales/cornwall
In 1998, main area moved closer to liverpool and a lot more spread out over the whole midlands, north and mid wales and sketchy round cornwall, the south and northen scotland

(Expected to be mainly Liverpool area nowadays)

Mums surname, Lewis:
In 1881, mainly South Wales and then north wales, spreading a bit into England.
In 1998, same as 1881 but spread out much more to england. with a point aiming at london and the south-east, also spreading down into Cornwall.

(knew my Granddads family were initally from North Wales, but they moved upto the west of scotland, cant remember when now but was no Lewis's shown in that area on either map)

did you find it odd that considering we're the second most common surname in the country, the spread from wales hasn't infested the entire country?

Rattle is a pretty unusual surname (in fact apart from my side I think there are only 3-4 other Rattle families as my dad's sister married and lost the surname) - obviously Simon Rattle the conductor and his siblings.

Interesting though Ste

Re: [GB] Surnames

I am interested in the origins of my surname and of relatives. Yes, it is a waste of money and i hardly consider myself obsessed, but even still i find it mildly enlightening to use facilities at my disposal to trace the roots of my name. It's just ashame that there are less than 100 people sharing my surname and this site is of no use to me :|

According to my father, we hail from a scottish tribe who fled to London after commiting some heinous crime, then changed their name, but he was full of shit so thats quite possibly invented.

Re: [GB] Surnames

Apparently my surname is centralised in SE England (North Kent, etc), South Cornwall and the Hebredies, though it's also sprung up around Glasgow.

My rarer middle name is in random places (near Liverpool, in the Dover area and around Southampton) in 1881, and not enough records in 1998

The first ever "Rattle" was a court jester (because of the rattle thing he had)!

Re: [GB] Surnames

In 1881 there was only 1 person with my surname. Less than 100 in 1998.

Midlands for me; hardly surprising since my Dad was from Birmingham. Quite a few other hot spots elsewhere, south Devon, London area, and the North strangely enough. We get around

Re: [GB] Surnames

My surname was almost exclusively Scottish on the map. I knew there was a reason I liked Andy Murray.

I was interested to see that there were Jews and Muslims with my surname.
