anyone sick of christmas yet?
i went to visit a friend yesterday who works in a mall. the mall is cheerily decorated with christmas crap and all i could do is point and say 'that's disgusting!' and then we went to the drug mart to buy a bus pass and they were selling christmas chocolate beside the remaining halloween candy. again i pointed and said 'that's disgusting!' and then we went to safeways to get some pop and i saw the pepsi 2 litre bottles had a christmas theme on them and then i freaked out and shouted 'that's friggin disgusting!' and got some odd looks from other customers
seriously.. it's too soon to be doing the christmas thing
anyone else seeing this?

We put up the Christmas shelves and put crisps, cards, mince pies and other assorted cakes on them last week. Bear in mind that this is only a Tesco Express. The local Superstore/Extra put the mince pies out in the same week as my birthday (late September). However there doesn't seem to have been total Christmasification yet as very few shops that don't sell food have their Christmas displays out yet.
PS. Aryn, I need your address in BC so I can send you a Christmas Card before last posting date near the start of December.

Re: anyone sick of christmas yet?
I like christmas. One supposes this is just in the spirit of commercialism, which I don't have too much against. However because all-year round christmas advertising is shit I'd advise refusing to buy products from companies which advertise christmas related products before a certain date and encouraging others to do the same.

Re: anyone sick of christmas yet?
Yes, christmas decorations and advertising starts way to early. It's annoying walking down the streets seeing shops are hanging up jingle bells and glittering when summer has just finished a couple of months ago :/

Re: anyone sick of christmas yet?
I recall last year they were doing christmas stuff 4 months before hand.
My uncle who works at a wearhouse for one of the large retail outlets here says they usually have christmas stock up to 6 months beforehand.

It's not really Christmas until you buy the Christmas edition of the Radio Times!

Re: anyone sick of christmas yet?
It's funny isn't it. Right before christmas you're in a sudden rush of buying gifts because you've postponed it as long as possible. When every gift is bought you think to yourself: "Geez, I will buy gifts much earlier next year". Does it happen? Not at all. Buying gifts is probably one of the last things I do before christmas.

sure, and infact I've considered buying things up to 2 years in advance, all part of my master plan you see.
rather than rushing out to find that just perfect gift the day before christmas, start building a stockpile of gifts that you can randomly select from each year. I've noticed sometimes the things you want either aren't available around that time or they are one off offers, so buy it early, stash it somewhere for a whole year then you can sit and relax while everyone else drives themselves into a frenzy hunting gifts and queing for hours at checkouts.

Re: anyone sick of christmas yet?
The news are saying that companies are starting earlier this year because they fear that it will be a slow Christmas season for sales. I don't know how this is supposed to pep things up.
I resent Christmas. I love to give gifts but I hate feeling obligated to give gifts. I would like to just randomly through the year hand someone something and say "Merry Christmas" but then I'd still be expected to give a gift at the right time of year too so there is no point in it.

Re: anyone sick of christmas yet?
I usually end up buying presents the last week before Christmas. And I remember being woken up early by my parents on Christmas morning last year and having to tell them to wait as I wrapped their presents at 6am on the 25th itself.
But it's not just the fact that the shops are putting their Christmas stuff out earlier each year... I've noticed one or two Christmas cards with a religious theme. It seems the Church are bloody getting their noses into Christmas now! It's disgusting.

Re: anyone sick of christmas yet?
I am afraid the spirit of christmas is lost on me.
I give out of love. I give out of obligation.
I do not appreciate it when these two coincide.

Isn't that what Jehovah's witnesses do? But then you would have to knock on doors and stuff.
I like Christmas, mainly for the amount of time i get off work and the amount of alcohol there is to consume. Christmas decorations in shops don't really influence me either way, if i want/need something i will get it regardless of what merchandising has been used.
I was pleased to see the "Merry Christmas Birmingham" lights were up today not because of the timing but just relief that we wont be subjected to PC madness and "Winterval" again.
