BugWars

Commodore Alexander Hatch stood on his flag bridge. It had been 36 hours since the 14th survey flotilla had been attacked in a newfound system. The survey Flotilla had lost half of the survey ships and the Escort Carrier too. No one knew why the unknown species attacked but the system was highly industrialized, even by human standards. The survey flotilla had immediately fallen back to tau ceti science station. Once their the surviving cruiser and destroyers watched the jump point while the survey elements contacted Commodore Hatch’s garrisons at Harris’ Town, the closet garrison a mere two jumps away.

Now Commodore Hatch had ordered the Flotilla to evacuate tau ceti and meet his squadron of ships at Jaglar, a Felinid colony. Before his squadron jumped from Harris’ Town they sent a warning to the fleet base a Romulus. He hoped to revive reinforcements within a couple of days. In the meantime he had to hold the jump point the Jaglar-Tau Ceti jump point. He would have to he didn’t have the units to evacuate the entire colony.




The Bug Wars was known in history as the First Interstellar war. To those who participated it was just the bug war. It was the Allinces first test a military force. It was waged against a truly alien enemy. Violent and unreasonable. It was a war of xenocide.




In this Thread you will play the captains in the allince fleet in war against an unknown enemy as time progresses and intel is gained on themthere tab will be changed and filled out.

You need to choose your ship class, name it, declare which member of the allince it is, and captian with history

Allince Races
Humans - This race dothing nothing well and everything good. There main adavntage is in there industrial base it is much larger then that of anyother member, they can makre ships fast.

Felinids - A Feline race, they are the next most numerous member after humans and have the second largest industrial base. They are masters of fighter ops everyone of there ships comes with a contingent of fighters, the number depends on the size of ship.

Grond - This species is built like centaurs, as a draw back they have no fighters. However they can take more radiation then the other races, and have there own faster drive system.

Avarians - They are the least mumerous race in the allince, but because of there ancestors who were birds they have a very high affinity for dogfighting. They either form there own carriers or serve in Avarian squadrons on Human carriers.



The Enemy
????


Ships

Battleship - Largest ship avalible realy tough, with large missle battaries

Battle Cruiser - the second Largest ship large missle battaries, pretty strong.

Carrier - A large carrier holding three squadrons.

Cruiser - A balanced vessel good speed and good power

Escort Carrier - a smaller faster verson of the carrier, but only holds one squadron

Destroyer - smallest vessel, very fast, and can be equiped with a cloacking device.



Important Tech

Missles- The primary weapon of space combat, most are nuclear weapons. Stoped by shileds

Primaries- Ironicly a secondary weapon. It is a laser that functions at close range. Will go through shileds

Data Link- A computer on a Flottila flag ship, corridnates point defence drasticly reducing the damage taken form fighters and missles. Will not function once flag ship is destroyed.

Jump Point- a gravtainol anomily allows away around the light barrier.

Void Anomily- for some reason a jump point open into a void of space with no large boddies.

The ships avalibe are as follows

44th flotilla and 14th survey flotilla
3- Cruisers(two reserved for mrmao and asme)
1 - Escort carrier
1 Fighter squadron( reserved by flapjack)
8- Destroyers

62nd Task Force
1- Balttle ship(not avalible to play)
2- Battle cruisers(two taken by Ryon J'kar, and Acidk)
3- Escort carriers(one reserved by fluffie)
8-Cruisers
12- Destroyers

hmm
I'd like to pick a fighter squadron here.
so if I'm allowed to that, I'll use this:

Name: Flapjack
race: Avarian
Ship type: Fighters, type of fighter depending on mission
stationed on: the 44th flotilla escort carrier
History: Flapjack was 1 of the many candidates for the civilian flightschool, training and more importantly qualifying in record time and first of his class. Immediatly he was asked to go into the space navy, an offer he gladly accepted.
His first training was as helmsman for capital class ships, his first assignment was to a sluggish escort carrier. Several days into a short range exploration mission, several fighter pilots where injured.
Flapjack was thus given a short brief on how to fly the fighter into a gas giant, in order to collect data on its composition, after this flight Flapjack decided that he wanted to be a fighter pilot and thus started training for it.
Again Flapjack qualified in record time and was given a position aboard a small Avian carrier, Flapjack served with distinction and after 2 years he was reassigned to a human escort carrier in the 44th flotilla, where he would take command of the fighter squadron aboard. In the meanwhile Flapjack had qualified to fly every type of fighter and bomber spacecraft in the Human and Avian space navy

Race: Felinids (Some Gronds)
History: Anthony is not a usual felinid name as most people would guess, but being brought up on Earth meant he had to have a pronouncable name, and thus he was given the name Anthony. He graduated Military School with honours and pride, and was given his first command 3 years later on the Destroyer "Voyager IV". He quickly climbed the command lader form then on, to his current poition on the Cruiser "High Charity". Though he has never entered battle, he has several time come a within a hairs bredth of disaster, managing a cease fire that allowed for a settlement to be found in several clashes with agressive species. With an unusual ammount of weaponry for a Felinid ship, there are less fighters than there would be on any other Felinid Cruiser.

History:
Cid had been posted to many different ships during his time in the 62nd Task Force. He used to be a fighter pilot before he became a Helmsman, moving large ships around tactfully during many dangerous situations. He tactics were noted after many years and was promoted to the captains right hand man, his effective Number One. After the captain retired from his duties, many years ago now, Cid took up the captains position and began to command the ship, which was a Hypogryph-Class Battle Cruiser named the Demon Guardian. Cid never liked the name, but it was not as if he was going to change it. Ever since then Cid had commanded the ship and used his tactics whenever possible.

History (Acid I hope you don't mind if I add a friendship between our chars)

Once the Ghostpath was christened. Ryon J'kar was first promoted from Carriers after being extremely effective and was given first priority to the ship of his choice. Being the ambitious man he was, his instincts told him to go for the best. So he did. He requested the helm of a Spearhead Class Battle Cruiser. Any and everyone feared a ship like that. He wanted it. Since taking the helm, he's been flying along side of Captain Cid Killer and his "Demon Guardian" and would defend him at all costs.

hmm, I think I spotted a problem.

MrMao, Acidk has a battlecruiser, not a normal cruiser. Thus Mad Cat would have to get a cruiser or some other ship

Oh and I changed my race to avian and added a brief history :P

Escort Carrier :: 62nd Task Force
The Strider

Captain Alfred "Fluffie" Warren (Human)

The ships crew consists out of both humans and felinids, with the fighter squadron being entirely avarian. This mix of races as a crew is a test, to see if it'll increase the effiency of carrier and fighter operations. The Alliance would've like for gronds to be apart of this project as well, but at the time of construction and training, there were no grond academy graduates available.
The entire crew is still relatively green, due to not having seen any real action yet, but they have spent some months training together and were just assigned to the 62nd Task Force before it was called out on its current mission.

So basically:
The ship was constructed by the humans, the avarians added their fighters and the felinids (during construction) added their 'superior' fighter operations equipment/skills/experience to the carrier.
The crew were all academy graduates, gathered when the ship was finished being constructed and then trained further to cooperate with each other and to get to know the ship.
Stuff.

What do we get fighter-wise, how big are squadrons etc?
And how much/what kind equipment & weaponry do our ships have?

Well at the moment all the fighter squadrons are fighter bombers that carry one primary and about six small nukes. A squadron is about fifty fighters.

Fluffie your ships is fine, would only really work on a a carrier though, so no one get any ideas

Madcat well it depends on what you want to do because my co dm is not really a dm just a more informed player and if i cant find someone it is you, unless you want the job and will save me the tourcher time which it takes to persuade you.

well unless you plan on using close to a 200 nuclear war heads i'd say your good, plus there is a very effective fleet train resupply bettween battles and if neescary i'm sure you could resupply in battle no problem(but you wont know why theres no problem for a bit). carriers have enough missles for about 12 reloads on there fighters.

guess it is time to use hefty anti-matter missiles for virtually everything combined with radiation explosives to knock out weakened hulls and unarmoured personel.

Fine then I need to give madcat his job, madcat you get the battle ship and your rank is admiral and in charge of the 62nd task force Fluffie you are a commodore and get to be in charge of all 62nd task force fighters, and carriers.

History: Alexander is an intelligence officer in the psiops division. He has been working in the psiops division at military intelligence head quarters for the last four years. Six very dull weeks, that is all about to change.

Alexander walked onto the brige of his flag ship, the warning alarm was blarring. As he strode onto the brige he snapped "report". Within a few seconds he was appraised of the situation. There were a dozen enemy destroyers, eight cruisers and one battle cruiser. The destroyer picket on the jump point had engaged the first few ships and destroyed two destroyers. The picket reported that they had had near on hundred percent accuracy. Now the destroyers were falling back at almost double speed then that of there enemy who were prusing them at what seemed like a ponderous pace. Only a couple of seconds later Alex had assesd the stiuation.

"Okay Ladies and Gentelmen, Get flpajack and his squadron of the carrier and make a strike on that battle cruiser, and then work there way down. Move all the destroyers of to the left of our current poisiton, ready to hit the enemy on that side of there battle line. "

kraggesh sat in his cabin, looking intently at the chessboard in front of him, the various peices having not moved for quite some time, a knock sounds at the door and he looks up

come in

the door slides open and a lower rank officer steps in, salutes, and hands kraggesh a slip of paper, he returns the salute and looks over the peice of paper, it was a communique from the 44ths flagship, they were under attack and were requesting reenforcements, kraggesh nods

thankyou

kraggesh stands and shortly after dismissing the other officer, heads quickly to the bridge, upon arrival he speaks directly to the communications officer

send the affirmative, we will be on our way in half an hour

with that statement the other ships in the task force are notified and the mekkora and her task force come to life as they prepair for the jump

Alarms suddenly started blaring and Flapjack, who wasn't quite used to have a so much larger room all for himself, slipped out of bed to avoid hitting his head on the existing bed above him. Within 30 seconds he was in his flight suit and headed towards the hangars, they would be briefed during their launch preparations as normal in case of an emergency.

2 minutes after the alarm Flapjack was in his fighter, having also managed a quick check-up of his craft, and now waiting for his briefing and the arnaments teams. Moments later a voice came through the small headset he was wearing to instruct him and his team, behind his fighter all of the other pilots had now boarded their craft and were busily strapping themselves in, below their craft it was swarming with people and weapon racks, the small thermonuclear warheads being mounted on their fighters and armed just moments before launch to avoid anything accidently going off.

Their mission, as flight control had explained, was to take out an enemy battlecruiser. They where now 3 minutes into the alarm and Flapjack's fighter was lowered into the launch tube, almost automatically Flapjack slammed the thrusters into full power as he roared down 250 meter stretch to the outside world and the harsh vacuum of space, instinct taking over his immediate response as the moment he exited the launch tube he quickly checked the immediate surroundings. His nav beacon then jumped on and indicated his target.

Almost 4 minutes into the alarm, Flapjack and the entire squadron are neatly formed up in 5 ship triangles, each formation was a flight group and Flapjack was in the first group, their tactic would be to come in in triangle formation and dump their nukes on the same area, hoping to breach the thick armor and cause serious damage inside the lumbering battlecruiser.

"Here we go, remember to target the same spot and try to pull away before your nukes go off, I don't want anybody turning into toast. As soon as we've dropped our cargo we'll retreat for rearments and refueling. The enemy hasn't deployed fighters as of yet but they might still do so."

Okay lads well i'll play asme till the bum gets here.

Alexander watched as the destroyers got away from the battle line. He watched as they stopped firing at what should be about mid-range. Then it connected not only did they have no data link but there missles only had a very short range.

"Okay lets give me something else to shoot at, all cruisers are to move to far missles range and engeage the enemy cruisers."

The three cruisers moved to far missle ragne and began pounding the enemy cruisers. Meanwhile the destroyers were forming up on the left. flapjacks fighters were screaming inot the enemy fleet well on there way to making the critical strike on the enemy.

After having being delayed on his way to the bridge, ASME finally made it in time to see the first volley of missiles fly of into the distant cruisers. "Report," he barked. He had assumed form the first glance that they were in a combat scenario, he found himself needing to get up to date as quickly as possible. "Sir all our fighters were away before we were ordered to engadge at long range...." said the TO, "Very good TO, now Helmsman get us closer, our guns are only of real use at close range." said the calm ASME, too calm thought his TO, but the moment of doubt was gone, after all why wouldnt the Captain be calm and collected?

Flapjack and his fighters were now closing on their target rapidly, several missiles sped past on their way to the remaining fleet behind them but as of yet they still had not encountered any resistance. This ment the enemy had bad scanners, bad operators, or no idea what they had coming for them.

Almost 30 seconds later Flapjack realised it almost had to be last of the 3, the squadron had begun firing thrusters to get into their final firing positions, coming in on the side of the battlecruiser now. Flapjack quickly examined his short range scans and sent the reports back to the flagship, moments later he finally broke radio silence for the final instructions.

"Flight 1 and flight 2 will strike in immediatly, your target is near the aft of the ship at what appears to be a relatively exposed reactor, if I'm correct our combined firepower will be enough to breach the armor at that location. The moment the first nukes detonate, Flight 3 will target the reactor itself, their nukes should be set on a high delay fuse to allow them to get to safety before things get nasty. By the time flight 3's nukes go off we should all be disengaged already, timing is of the utmost importance. Flights 4 and 5 will target these positions on the forward hull."

Flapjack quickly tapped a set of commands, marking a second part of the enemy battlecruiser and highlighting it to the selected flights 4 and 5, they where now 2 minutes out.

"I believe these to be short range anti-capitaly weapons, there appears to be some smaller guns near there as well so be carefull. Flights 6, 7 and 8 will target the centers decks, at these locations."

Again Flapjack's fingers tapped across the small touch screen, highlighting yet another area of the battlecruiser.

"To destroy the armor protecting their main cargo bays, flights 9 and 10 will follow up with high-delay nukes, set to go off simultaneously with flight 3's nukes, to destroy whatever is in those cargobays and hopefully cause secondary explosions. We're here to do damage and when all nukes are gone, we're gonna make a brake for home. Afterburners on my mark....... Mark."

With the final words away, Flapjack pressed the small red button to the side of his control stick, activating the high-power afterburners to give his fighter a last minute spurt of speed. They where now less then 60 seconds out and the weapons armed lights blinked on, at the same time the various flight leaders reported ready to go and targets aknowledged. Flapjack didn't have to set any special things, his nukes would be blind-fire and impact detonated. Behind him however he knew that the leaders of flights 3, 9 and 10 would be setting their nukes to detonate a small 3 minutes from now, long enough to allow them to get away, but probably not long enough for the enemy to disarm the nukes.

The last seconds till engagement ticked away and Flapjack released his afterburners, a quick look at fuel gauge revealed a better then expected number, he had 75% of his fuel left. More then plenty to make a clean get-away or engage into dogfights should the need arrise, Flapjack quickly glanced out the sides of his c*ckpit, revealing most of the enemy formation to his right and flight 2 directly left of him, all fighters where now pulling into close formation and there was still now enemy fire. Flapjack held his breath as the distance indicator hit 50 kilometers, firing range for his nukes, and softly pressed the button near the top of his stick, immediatly he felt a slight jar go through his fighter and moments later 6 bright streaks flashed in front of him, mere moments after that streaks started to appear from all sides as most of the nukes where being launched.

Immediatly Flapjack slammed onto the afterburners again, pulling his craft almost perpendicular to the enemy battlecruiser as he began to maneuver, hoping to avoid any return fire. Moments later space burned as the battlecruiser returned fire, its primaries and sensors quite clearly designed towards engaging capital class ships as none of their shots got even remotely close. Almost 1 minute after releasing his nukes, Flapjack saw the bright flashes of their nukes going off on the battlecruiser's hull. The enemy's point defenses where hopelessly innacurate and only a few lucky shots had managed to stop a couple of nukes.

Again streaks bore through the dark sky as the remaining fighters of flights 3, 9 and 10 released their nukes and began to pull out. Flapjack in the meanwhile had apparently left the battlecruiser's range as he was no longer taking the hopelessly inaccurate fire. He however hadn't had a lot of time for his small command interface and when he checked it, it read all fighters as unreachable. The enemy had jammed his command interface's comlink and he could only hope that his pilots had managed to get out.

When the remaining enemy fire stopped and yet more flashes illumated the void of space, Flapjack started transmitting. First and foremost on the flight control frequency.

"Flapjack of attack squadron 1 reporting in, mission completed, all nukes have been spent. We are returning for refuel and rearnaments, please confirm."

Flapjack did not wait for the standard protocol confirmation however and kept the channel open in listen only mode, switching his own transmitter to his squadron's frequency before announcing.

"Squadron lead to flight leaders, casualty reports."

Fluffie sits on his bridge, his crew performing their pre-combat duties, the two other ships under his command for this mission in formation with his own Escort Carrier. All flight crews had been put on alert, the fighter squadrons ready to launch and engage.

14th flottila
Comadore Hatch was waiting for the casualty reports on the fighters. If the enemy didn't have a data link then well the squadron would come back with light cassualties. He turned his head from the read out on the left panel of his chair to the reports on th right. So far the enmy had lost one cruiser to his long range fire. A new report came in, his gamble had paid off. The fighters had destroyed the battle cruiser, and brought back two very interesting points of information. They had no data link, and they had no fighters. Most comanders when they had only one squadron would horde them but with these cricumstances he had a sledge hammer. The first flight was coming in for reload now, second filght was only a couple of second later.
"Okay send the message to flapjack to move to the cruisers next."
as Alexnader refoucesed on his layout he saw the High Charity break formation and charge the enemy.

"Damm, that could cost us a cruiser. Send the order to the destroyers to move to engage the enemy. and if he survies that battle line get the captian a medal."


Flapjack: Your second squadron hit the battle cruiser with what they had, destroying the in a chain of
small explosins. The casualty reports come in, you only lost one fighter to point defecne. There were no reports of enemy fighters at all.

Asme Your ship closes with the enemy cruisers at about mid range you start to recive some missle fire but it is un corridinated and the majority of the missles are destroyed. however enouigh got through to bring your shields down to 90%

Enemy ships left
7 cruisers
12 destroyers.

Evryone else You make the transit to Jaglar and on the edge of your scaners you see the 14th flottila engaged with a larger enemy force.

Okay um madcat as long as you assume ther natural and nothing man made(other then the ship) is involved. You cant luanch fighter through them and except for some smaller ships there is no way to see what is on the other side , yet.

*Flapjack heard a variety of chears coming over the radio as the massive battlecruiser exploded behind them, a few seconds later the flight leaders began reporting in, a total of 1 casaulty, 1 flyer reckless enough to get up close to fire his primary.*

"Congratulations on a job well done guys, but we'll be back as soon as we reload so I need everyone to stay sharp, the battlecruiser didn't have anything fast enough to hit us with, but it could be a whole different story with those destroyers."

*As Flapjack said this, his new commands came over the comm and he sighed, he'd expected as much. Normally fighters would be allowed to rearm after a strike like this, then they would stay in patrol near the main fleet, not to strike again untill they approached the enemy and the real fighting began. Quite clearly however this wasn't an ordinary situation as the enemy hadn't deployed a single fighter*

*Flapjack however didn't get much chance to think about this and what it would mean to a potential war, as he now faced the challenge of docking with a carrier in combat manuevers, which was never an easy task*

"Ok then, open fire with all the weapons you can, but be sure that they will hit the enemy and not out fighters, we dont want to waste ammo or people." commanded Anthony

"Yes Sir." replied the TO, "All weapons batteries opening fire now..."

*As the squadron moved past the High Charity the comm in Flapjack's fighter crackled once more*

"Flight 3 leader, Sir, the High Charity is opening fire, why are they moving into short range of those ships, she'll get cut to ribbons."

*Flapjack quickly switched to the apprioprate channel, that for flight command, and pressed the mic button with his left thumb*

"Aknowledged Flight 3 leader, I'll contact the High Charity and the admiral."

*Immediatly Flapjack moved his thumb to the general channel, he knew that would mean everyone in the area would be able to hear him but he didn't care about that now, if the High Charity got into short range to soon, she'd be destroyed for sure*

"Squadron 1 leader to cruiser High Charity, back off will you, those ships are decked out with short anti-capital beams, they didn't stand much of a chance against us, but your ship can't go toe to toe with 1 of those cruisers, let alone 7 of them. Stand back and do what you're best at, me and my fighters will go in for short combat."

*After that Flapjack released the mic button again, listening carefully for what fleet command had to say about this, a few moments later a bright flash appeared of to his port side, the jump hole closing and opening rapidly as the 62nd jumped in*

Time to clean house!

*AcidK smiled and sat on his bridge chair, watching the veiwscreen when the 62nd Task Force fell out of FTL space. His battlecruiser automatically began to look at the current situation before making multiple lock-ons with the batteries.*

Target the closest Cruiser to the 62nd Task Force Fleet, keep firing until it is gone and move on to the next nearest Cruiser. Don't give them a chance to breath, people!

*The battlecruiser jolted as the crew took on Cid's command, all lock-on unlocking and then re-locking to aim at the Cruisers ahead of the fleet.*

Keep all anti-fighter batteries open to stop any enemy fighter craft having easy gunning sessions around the ship, we don't want to be destroyed by a few mere pilots now do we?

*A human female ahead of him, seemingly the communications and scaning officer, turned around and gave a small thumbs up, signalling that the ship is ready to fire.*

Let the fireworks begin, open-fire!

The Strider's received information and sensor reports from the Escort Carrier in the 14th Flotilla as she made the transit to Jaglar. A smile turned up on most of the crew's faces, no fighters, nor a Data Link detected in the enemy formation and already one vessel destroyed by friendly fighters. Looking from the main screen to his Comms Officer, he started talking.

"Ask if the Wasp and the Arch Royal have their fighters loaded with nukes yet, if not, tell them to do so and stand by to receive orders."

"Aye Captain."

Deciding to launch two squadrons in two seperate strikes, he decided to go for their remaining cruisers first. To make sure his fighters wouldn't get caught in any crossfire, he quickly brought up which ships were already being targeted and which not and quickly found two cruisers.

"Mark those as ours and tell the other two carriers' squadrons to engage one each. They are to launch when ready."

"Immidiately."

Happy with his own Felinid crew doing most of the Fighter Ops, the operation crews on the other two carriers merely performing assisting tasks, he still had to see if the mixed crew on his ship would be more effective. His own Avarian squadron would stay docked for now and the weapons of his carriers primed and ready, but not yet engaging... With these new enemies, he didn't know what to expect.

"The Wasp and Arch Royal report having launched their fighters, both squadrons underway in attack formations."

"Very well. Send our good luck to all the pilots."

The Comms Officer nodded, the Helmsmen on his ship as well as the Weapons Officers had received their orders and were staying clear of the battle. While the Strider was keeping an active eye on the battle already engaged, the Arch Royal kept an eye on the battle that could come - her active scanners were set to long range, hoping to detect any suprise before it could really become on. The Wasp's sensor crews were doing a bit of both, checking and validating data coming from both ships...

"Yes Sir?" he replied
"Co-ordinate our actions with the 62nd fleet, we dont want to become targets for our own allies now do we?" said Anthony
"No sir, of course not...."

ooc- well, that fits what i was thinking. ok basically im hijacking the subspace approach from descent freespace, without some minor changes that interplay had in there to make the story work. you can transferr infinite mass through a node in an infantesimal amount of time. there are "nodes" scattered randomly about, connecting various places throughout the galaxy and the universe at large. technology has not yet been developed to utilise the larger and longer range nodes, due to their inherent instability. also the drives used to open long range subspace "portals" are far too large to equip on fighters or or bombers. however jumps can be initiated without nodes by capital ships for intra system travel. fighters are capable of micro jumps, used in mid to long range missions, and for quick return to the base of operations. -ooc
