Using them would defeat the fun in cheating. I remember directory listing featured in one of those "hacker challenge" things as part of the game. This one explicitly says no rules.

Simple cipher, might write it up if I have the time...
Code:
finally, well done, the end of the
first stage is within your grasp.
all you have to do now is figure out
this code, and if you are reading
this i assume you already have,
which i applaud. now before you
continue onward to your goal, may i
just ask or even beg that you think
about how much time and effort you
put in to solving this riddle, and
just remember how quickly it can be
wasted by giving your answers away.
if you do give your answers away dont
do it on a public forum, you are telling
hundreds of people your own solutions that
you spent time solving. it is up to you
in the end i was just trying to advise
you not to post them on public forums. now
for the riddle itself, all you have to
do is send a mail to the address below
where the subject line is the answer to
this riddle, dies half its life, lives
the rest. dances without music, breaths
without breath what is it? good luck oh
and you can put anything you like in
the mail message, say hi or how you
hate net riddle.
The answer to the riddle is "fire".
Notice they spelt "breathes" incorrectly.
I don't have e-mail set up atm, so maybe someone could get to the next stage for #riddle?

I considered tree (after abusing Google), but neither answer makes much sense to me. Notice they say they reply to incorrect answers, but they're replying to each email by hand, heh.

the "dies half it's life" bit doesn't make sense for fire but does for a tree (ie. dead in winter)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your answer for this riddle was
unfortunalty incorrect.
I also must apologise for the delay, and possibly for the spam (one copy of
this note is sent
every time you send in an answer). The answer is fairly hard and I am very
strict about giving
away the next stage's location.
Anyway good luck if you try again, if it helps last time I checked over
1,000 people had sent in
answers and only about 25 were right (but this number is growing rapidly).
Once again good luck, and hope I get the right one from you next time.

That's really, strange and I don't know what to make of it. There are lines I can't make out to be arrows too.

anyone with photoshop care to take that image apart?
EDIT:
Almost all the lines I can see are either arrows or the tails of arrows. There apparantly is another image behind the current one, as far as I can see.

*laughing*
I used an edge enhance, to great effect. Then I started writing out the letters that were pointed to roughly, skipping ones I couldn't figure out, a..o..v..a..r..s..l. As I was doing this I thought "hmm, how come some arrows don't have clear heads, and the second arrow from the bottom doesn't point anywhere?" (it points just below "music"). Then I had a sudden flashback to a little proggie we used at school called something like photodesk, where you can generate the kind of background the puzzle picture has by drawing arrows. I figure they're just a reminent of some software they use, and not a real clue.
