Best Action Movie Ever
I hate threads like this, anyhow...
Die Hard -
Great script and story
Great villain - one of the best
It's a heist, and I always love heist movies
A period piece - 80's: Japanese company in the US, black and white guy cop buddy movie, sophistication of corporate culture (related flick: Stone's 'Wallstreet').
Great sound - Helicopters soaring around the building, explosions
Great effects - note explosions
Bonus: People shouting unnessarily in German in every other scene
Drawback: elevator shaft fall scene - McClain should never have been able to catch that second ledge.

The Glimmer Man.
edit: serious guys watch it it's on channel 5 about once every three months, it's an education in 'how to waste far too much money' because it's really truly bad

i liked 'die hard: with a vengeance' at least as well.
and whatever you think about the trilogy, matrix was a great movie and reloaded had one of the greatest action sequences of all time.

My first thought is Robocop. I don´t like action movies much, they have to be really good to not seriously annoy me.

Re: Best Action Movie Ever
I'd have to agree with Die Hard as one of the best action movies. The first Indiana Jones movie and the first Matrix film both qualify for some sort of action hall of fame though.
But it depends how wide you set the genre. The IMDB's "top rated action movies" includes Leon, Lord of the Rings and Sin CIty - which are all very good. But I'd be reluctant to view those films as "action", as even though they may include a fair amount of action, that's hardly the primary draw of the movie.

Gladiator must be up there; though, again, it only falls rather loosely into the 'action' category.

There is a fair amount of action in Debbie Does Dallas as well, however, I would hesitate to include it in the "action movie" catagory.

darling you can say that it was a movie that I enjoyed phenominally. A movie which embodies the escapism and mindlessness of true action. A movie which I enjoy every time I watch it.
but you don't need to
and you won't be taken seriously if you try to
argue that die hard is in anyway a credit to the art of cinematography.
lots of people enjoy the harry potter books and that is nice for them it's good that they find escapist enjoyment. but even you would laugh them out of the room if they tried to suggest that harry potter was Dickens.

well no,
what i think is that 'it is an art'
like all arts there is both good and bad versions of that art and creations that one likes or doesn't like in that art. but those 2 characteristics can combine in any way in a single piece. much like in any other art.
so you can have:
1) Good example of that art + I don't like it myself
2) Bad example of that art + I don't like it myself
3) Good example of that art + I do like it myself
4) Bad example of that art + I do like it myself
I'm suggesting that Die hard is an example of (4). no category is 'higher' art than any other. It's all just art.
EDIT: so for some people harry potter is (4) and Dickens is (1) or (3) depending on taste. for me harry potter is a (2)

an objective judgement requires evidence and explanation. a subjective judgement requires only opinion.
but opinion can not justify an objective judgement anymore than evidence and explanation are required for a subjective judgement.
disagreement is an opinion. so no. die hard can not be (3) merely because someone disagrees. die hard could only ever be a (3) or a (1) if there was evidence and explanation.

Re: Best Action Movie Ever
A film, if it exists at all, must be a film. Because it is a word we use for a categorisation: we do this all the time. So certain creations, which we say represent their art form (in this case film), should display a deep understanding of the various techniques of that art form.
(Thanks yahwe <3)

well that depends what you mean by good.
there are rules that make a poem a poem and not a movie.
I took the trouble to sepparate these ideas (see above).
you didn't understand.
I then took the trouble to try to explain that sepparation(see above).
once again you don't understand.
I can't help but think that if i have to educate you from scratch (which i am honestly more than willing to do). then it might be better if you use irc and come to #forums and pm me. GD is a big community, no point in me educating you piece by piece; post by post, here. We'll just end up de-railing the thread and boring people.

That's about as useful as saying that "everything is subjective". Whilst that may be true, its pretty useless for the purposes of the debate.

Whether you consider a piece of art to be a good or bad example of it's genre is subjective.

so did i.
but I also said that whether a piece of art is a good or bad representation (ambassador) of it's genre is not entirely subjective. I tried to sepparate 'liking' something from saying 'this is a good representation of it's genre'

If we classified the letter A as unwarranted praise resulting from a brilliant marketing campaign, the letter B as the quality of the original comic books, and the letter C the quality of the movie then I think that my antipathy for that movie can be summed up with the following formula:
Antipathy = (A*B)/C
Your assesment of the movie may be a bit more honest.
