Books/Films/Storys with the...
...this has happened before, it will all happen again feel to them.
If its all happened before, and its all going to happen again, what is the ****ing point of me reading the story? I know how it ends then, heroe somehow saves the day, things go ok for about 3 minutes, and then the whole stupid cycle starts again.
Recently, there was the poor remake of Battlestar Galactica that had this kind of theme, now I started reading The Wheel of Time, and only 3 books in and this shit is being rammed down my throat.
Arrrrrggghh :/

Re: Books/Films/Storys with the...
welcome to the world of the wheel of time
its the same with any heroic fantasy really, its just something that you have to deal with or stop reading the genre, although wheel of time is possibly better than most, in that it is a bit darker in places, and some of the good guys can die and stuff

Read the Sword of Truth, it's ace, the new book just came out. I think Goodkind is trying to out do Jordan.

Re: Books/Films/Storys with the...
One of the reason I really like WoT is that the "magic" is explained to some degree. It’s not just some mystical force that you know nothing about like in Lord of the rings. When reading fantasy its important to me that the "magic" is explained as in how it works, its limitations and so on.
Is this the case in the sword of truth series or is the magic more like in LotR?
I`ve thought about starting to read the series.

Re: Books/Films/Storys with the...
the sword of truth goes into even more detail about the magic, to an extent, each book is about one of the different rules of magic, and the main characters understanding of them, which is very good in a way, but can sometimes hold up the actual story
i would reccomend it highly though

Sounds interesting!
One more question though. Is it a 4 book long story (like WoT) or is there a new "evil" in each book that needs to be beaten? Do you have to read the first 3 books to enjoy book 4 for instance?

Re: Books/Films/Storys with the...
although i have read each book in order, it theory, you could read any of them as stand alone novels, as each deals with a new and different problem, it might take you a little while to get to grips with some of the characters if you did it that way though (and its currently on about its 8th book or something)

It's funny that a thread should be made about this.
Today i just bought this book.
It's an interesting read so far (although unfortunately i paid a reasonable amount more for it).

Like hell.
I personally like pratchett and, ehm, the first of the covenant series.
Also high in my top ten is that enormous series of the Belgarion chronicles. Although, like the covenant series, the second seems worse.
I lost track of one series; it started with 'the sword of shannara' but after that came a lot of episodes written by different people and I just could not cope anymore.
Ofcourse then, I found the Lord in my life, and now I'm an idiot.

i assume that you are talking about the chronicles of thomas covenant, unbeliever by stephen donaldson? couldn't get away with them personally, although he has just published the sequel.
and the sword of shannara series is ALL written by a guy called terry brooks, i liked the early stuff but have stopped reading :/ much preferred his word and the void series.
and imo anyone who finds the lord is an idiot, so at least your in the majority within your faith

huh... I guess you're right on the shannara thing, must be something with trillium, or black trillium then...
Yes donaldson it is, mighty interesting this sequel thing, are you sure it's a third book (as he died on the end of the second and all that)? Don't tell me it's his son that now goes to the land inheriting the ring etc.

Kant and Nietzche are most definitely not absolutely "better" than reading anything else. Nietzche especially, the guy was a crackpot. But especially Kant, as he has a tendency to go on and on and on and on and on.
Seriously, why did you even say that?

I think the better rule is "Don't read The Business or Dead Air". Whilst supposedly his SF goes under the name Iain M Banks (except in america, where it all goes under that name), something like A Song of Stone, or the majority of The Bridge, is easily more fantastical than Inversions.

i really liked dead air actually, ive read all the sci fi and all but 1 or 2 of the non sci fi, and it was one of my favourites.
the business did truly suck though.
and Walking on glass is pretty damn weird too, and very very good. It's the kind of book that you sit and think about when you have finished it.

Dead Air was basically "Conversations I had down t'pub" in novel form. The writing was also subpar; he said he wrote it in a month and it shows.

whether it shows or not, i still very much enjoyed it. True, it wasn't as clever as a lot of the others, and was about as deep as a puddle. But it seemed to me to be a ripping good yarn.
+ conversations down t'pub would be an interesting book anyway, if it was written by banks.

Stop the anger and hatred.
In regards to reading kant I trust whoever said reading him was enjoyable has not actually read anything by him.
(I was going to say something about people preferring to read fiction but then I remembered how utterly non-factual kant and nietzsche were and I laughed for a good eight and a half minutes).

Nietzsche is an utterly apalling read. Seriously, it reads like some sort of bad angsty poetry. It only appeals to utter faggots like Nodrog.
Kant's ideas were ocassionally OK but Lord knows why you'd want to read the original text.

It was a shocker to some conservative Americans to read about 4 and 5 yr olds cursing and planning global domination and shit like that and made the book very controversial.
It's like band members killing themselves and sell 2 million records the year after that.
Still is a very good book, specially Ender's Shadow and all of Bean's and Petra's stories.
