CPU's yo

I am in need of upgrading my rather cumbersome Athlon 64 3000_ (1.8ghz) and am currently looking at either...

Athlon64 3800+
Athlon64 4000+

OR

Athlon 64 dual core 3800+

Now im currently facing doing a rather large amount of video compression so im drawn to the dual core jobby because ive heard itll speed up things consdierably when doing stuff such as video/audio compression etc etc.

However im planning on also purchasing a thermaltake all in one watercooling kit (the one with the giant tower thing that cools passively)

So ladies and gents, im looking for some advice on said purchases and whether im making a mistake on looking at the dual core (as its somewhat pricey)

My original intention was to try and convert my AGP and AMD based system into something that could run Intels latest dualcore offering which tomshardware currently has going at 4.2ghx (processor only costs 80 quid (!!!))

However i have ballistix memory and it isnt DDR2 so id have to fork out around 500 quid to do a proper 'upgrade and convert' to new. This would mean a new mobo, the pentium cpu, watercooling, new memory, new gfx card.

I could keep the psu and case i suppose.

So gents.......

help me!

You should make sure your video-compression program is able to use dual-core CPUs. Im not sure if simply launching two conversions at the same time is an alternative.

I would definately calc how much additional energy the second core is using up when it is not in use as i have my computers running 12 to 16 hours a day and most of the time the second core would be completely useless. I would hope that its possible to completely disable the second core to avoid the operating system automatically using the second core for nonsense tasks like a webbrowser, winamp or text editors and therefore keeping it running all the time.

Intel has announced severe price cuts for its CPUs recently and AMD will follow - you should definately watch the (coming) price changes as they can make up to 60%.

Re: CPU's yo

The cheapest, cost effective option would be to wait till July 23rd for AMD X2 price cuts, 35-50%, so that X2 3800+ would be slashed a fair bit, and you could buy that and just plop it in with a BIOS update at most.

That 805D isn't totally guaranteed at that speed, other factors like heat and motherboard affect the OC, I'm seeing at least 3.6GHz from them though, they run very hot and use alot of power, and you can easily OC that X2 3800+ past the 805D and still run cooler.

Re: CPU's yo

Thing is i want / need the processor now and 'price cuts' are always around the corner.

what to do what to do

I may save the cash for now then and just buy a decent watercooling system. THen wait for the inevitable price slashes.

Re: CPU's yo

I may suggest throwing in another suggestion, the AMD opteron 146 which is AMD's server version of the 3800x2, which costs less is more power efficient (I think) and has a much more room if you plan on overclocking.

146 is single core
closest are
Opteron 165 which is 2x1.8GHz 2x1MB cache is essentially an X2 3600+
or Opteron 170 which is 2x2.0GHz 2x1MB cache, essentially an X2 4000+

If you need something now well the X2 3800+ is still your best bet for the most cost effective solution, going Intel means mobo and DDR2 on top of the CPU (you could always find a DDR1 mobo though)

Price cuts as extensive as these are very rare and AMD was practically forced due to Intel with their own price cuts and new super CPU release.

Qft. You may regret buying just before this price-cut

Re: CPU's yo

Im going to wait for the CPU then.

In the mean time ive bought the Thermaltake Kandalf in black and also the Thermaltake Bigwater 745 with additional coolant and also a VGA block for the gfx card.

The guy at novatech said he had just bougth the very same stuff and it reduced heat/noise to pretty much zilch.

Re: CPU's yo

not sure if the price cut includes Opterons, but the X2 3800+ is no slouch in the OC department, around 2.6GHz (stock 2.0GHz) with little or no added voltage seems to be the norm, puts it around an X2 4800+ speed.

Due to some info from a korean site it seems that the 24th july is the day of AMDs pricecut and the X2 3800 will be at 170$ then (thats likely AMDs price for resellers - you could find the current reseller price and see if its worth waiting a month for you). The price cuts will be up to 46%.
