National Insurance Contributions

Am i right in thiniking, that while you're in full-time education you do not pay these? And is the governemnt (Inland Revenue, anyway) trying to theive my money when sending me a letter saying they think my contributions for 6 years (5 of which i was in full-time education) were insufficient to qualify for "a basic State Pension"?

Anyone have a clue?

Re: National Insurance Contributions

yes - once you have a national insurance number - you pay national insurance.
It's a type of tax that they can raise without saying "we're raising taxes"

Re: National Insurance Contributions

Basically when you are out of school when you don't have a job you keep having to sign on, if you don't sign on even when you are not eligable any longer for dole money, you stop getting NI stamps which are paid for by the goverment towards your pension.

So basically unless you are 60 odds atm you aren't ****ed and you shouldn't worry about it.

Not quite, its supposed to pay for your upkeep when you are out of work (eg unemployment allowance or jobseekers allowance or whatever the hell they call it now).

Its also monies which are supposed to go some way towards state pensions.

At least that is the theory, however in reality its just another tax sting.

Thats what i dont understand, i was at school/university for five of the six years they've mentioned, i wasnt signing on (tho i was signing on for a brief period of the sixth mentioned year).. ack, fk it - you're right, i'm not gonna worry about it just now.

Thanks.

Re: National Insurance Contributions

The only time i've ever paid NI contributions is in error when i've been on an emergency tax code (just started job) and then i've just claimed it back
And i'm still in full time education.
So i think you don't have to pay it ''just because you've got an NI number''
