Id like to complain bitterly that theres too much ethnic minority representation in the majority of UK soaps today. However to do so would have me labelled a racist by the PC brigade, so instead i quietly accept people coming into soap operas portraying stereotypes i neither understand nor really wish to.
The PC Brigade can take a running **** at a flying duck for all i care.

I don't seem to remember the PC Brigade complaining over the portrayal of the token white guy being a football hooligan in the BBC soap opera 'Darkie Street'.

Re: Hindu's Upset over Corrie
1. There's no such thing as the 'PC Brigade' outside the mind of Daily Mail, Daily Express and Sun readers.
2. 'Ethnic minorities' do not complain about anything. Specific members of whatever religion/race/etc might complain. But it's like an African saying "these whites are so funny; they make such stupid grammatical errors" when referring to a Bush speech or something.
3. If you seriously modify your speech based on your fevered imaginings of what the afforementioned 'PC Brigade' might say then you're a gutless whining faggot who doesn't deserve freedom and I look foreward when the jackboot of intolerance really does stamp on your face for all eternity.

A couple of months ago (when I was at home and had access to a television) I saw that "Postman Pat" was on CBBC or some such, felt nostalgic, and put it on (mainly because there was nothing else on, because television is rubbish), and they'd replaced all the old characters (Mrs Goggins, etc.) with people from ethnic minorities. The only white person I saw of the dozen-or-so characters that appeared in the 5 minutes before I switched it off in disgust was Pat himself. And it's set in a tiny Cumbrian village, for crying out loud. I hate political correctness.

By the way in the interests of better grammar the title of this thread should "Hindus upset over Corrie" as there isn't just one hindu who's upset. Thanks.

Re: Hindu's Upset over Corrie
Im confused, since the people of this thread aren't hindus (i assume) why would we 'get' why this was offensive? I can kind of see where they are coming from though, if the religious icon you 'believed' in was used as a weapon or manhandled dissmissively for the purposes of a soap scene you'd probably be upset. Saying you don't share their religious belief and what happened wasn't offensive isn't saying much imo (unless you know about/have studied the particular religion etc), besides asking to be consulted before religious icons are portrayed isn't exactly 'omg they're being stupid'
Id also like to know where the annual meeting of the PC brigade is, i keep hearing them mentioned but noone can point out their HQ my friend whispered to me that it might be an argumental slight of hand to be used on anyone who doesn't agree with you, but i just told the nazi conservative to shut up.
It is also genuinely roll on the floor laughing my arse of funny to hear people complaining that tv programmes are over representing ethnic minorities, 'cause last time i checked what the tv told me represented the east end of london, had about as much to do with what is 'real' as jordan's boobs. Its impossible to make programmes that are completely representative of the entire country as the entire country is pretty fcking diverse, so you find some sort of middle ground particularly if you're a commercial broadcaster and need the darkie's viewing figures, but that middle ground does work both ways and also includes people of different sexual leanings. Lets not stress and have a traditional cockny eastend knees up, apples and pears, eels and stuff, RICKY!

Re: Hindu's Upset over Corrie
To be fair I can see why hindu's are justifiably complaining, it's not that they are watching and being insulted.
It's just given that people who watch Corrie Street are likely to be Chav's and Kappa Slappers at home with their mom eating a microwaved dinner in front of the set before they go out breaking bus shelters, are then going to start looking at the Hindu minority or basically anyone of indian/pakistani origin cause they wouldn't know better, and assume they all beat the shit out of their women with religious statue's when they aren't being someone's bitch.
Which is somethign you don't really want to promote.
TV before the watershed does have a responsibility not to misrepresent ethnic minorities cultures to a largely ignorant and extremely racist (in hindsight now that I don't live in the UK) population.

Re: Hindu's Upset over Corrie
Well the line was "It would be ironic, wouldn't it. To be beaten to death by Ganesh, the God of good fortune." which isn't really that bad. It's not even a good example of irony. I'm supprised that the International League of Pedants weren't in complaining more than the Hindu's.
To be honest I wouldn't have felt upset if some mad bint had been wielding a crucifix, threatening someone in the same way.
Wouldn't you think people would kick up a fuss about the violence of it all instead of the use (or misuse) of religious icons?
But it's prob true that most corrie fans dropped out of school around 7 so cant write complaints or use a phone properly.

sorry, i realise the irony in my "campaign for better english" and not actually being able to spell or use grammar correctly myself, but i'm really rather tired. However, my point is still valid. If your going to use another countries language as your own, you should at least use it in the correct manner. that goes for any language, not just english

neither 'mom' nor 'mum' are words in their own right. Both are shortenings of the word mother. 'mom' has, if you will, literal roots (it is closer to the word 'mother') whereas 'mum' is the phonetic abbreviation in certain dialects or accents. If either term is to be uniquely correct, it's most likely 'mom'. Ergo, shut up.

Re: Hindu's Upset over Corrie
No, not really. You seem to be creating some sort of false dichotomy between "real" words and made-up words or something. All words are made-up. Their spelling is determined by their usage.
Mum and Mom are reasonably "old" words (compared to many other words) and their spelling both here and America has been determined fairly strongly.
