Man jailed over email hoaxes.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/l...re/4201775.stm
Isn't that a bit much?
I mean, the man deserves to be punished, but since when did causing emotional pain become a jailable crime?

1988, apparently.
"Any person who sends to another person ... a letter or other article which conveys ... information which is false and known or believed to be false by the sender ... is guilty of an offence if his purpose ... in sending it is that it should ... cause distress or anxiety to the recipient ..." (Malicious Communications Act 1988)
6 months sounds very excessive to me.

I'd go so far as saying it was quite lenient.

If he had posted it on an internet forum, hed have gotten away with it
, and got a whole heap of laughs from a group of his peers.

Re: Man jailed over email hoaxes.
To be honest, I do agree with the sentence. I think it is fairly harsh, but it is time that someone makes a clear point that this is the sort of stuff you simply don't pull. I think there is a fair bit of "Let's make an example out of you" in the judge's verdict.

Re: Man jailed over email hoaxes.
I wonder though, if everyone he emailed about was actually dead, did he still commit a crime or is he just very clever ?, like that Derek Acora bloke without the patronising scouse accent and the fake 'spirit voices'
I see a possible miscarriage of justice

Re: Man jailed over email hoaxes.
I would presume those who were hurt by his actions could still sue for damages in a civil case--regardless of the outcome of criminal case.

its the maximum prison sentence for that court.
the same court will sentence people who rob at knife point to less.
i fail to see how its 'lenient'
i think its 'excessive' and 'politically motivated'
oh oh oh and will 'get turned over on appeal'

Re: Man jailed over email hoaxes.
I think the sentence was fair.
He went out of his way to cause harm and distress to people who had done him no harm and maybe this will discourage other such asswipes.
Not that I dont think that muggers shouldn't be getting maximum sentences as well

Re: Man jailed over email hoaxes.
it probably will get turned over on appeal.
however, i feel he deserves it. telling people their loved ones are dead for a giggle is quite shit.
