Oh no, a thread has a few off topic posts in it. Rather than take it as part of what happens on pretty much any forum, I'm going to throw my toys out of the pram and ruin the thread completely.
As an aside, I find it as amusing as Pab did that you liked his posts and hated J's, when they were essentially, and, as you quoted, expressly, doing the same thing.

Re: How to be a Better Human Being
1. It wasn't just a few offtopic posts, it was offtopic posts with the sole intention of derailing a thread (see my previous post with the IRC logs).
2. pabs isn't a moderator. JBG is.
3. pabs's were relatively amusing and actually had some effort put into them. JBG's were just taken from the "JBG's GD jokes 101 book", and were purely there to ruin a thread. He/They ensured there were enough posts for people to jump on the bandwagon (ie: not just one or two, but 5-6) and ruin the thread.
Like I said, "meh, whatever". If this is what happens to threads that get created on this forum (and it isn't fixed by anyone and is in fact encouraged) then I simply won't bother making threads any more. That isn't a threat or a strop, it's just that I don't see the point in putting effort into something that will destroy it.

Smile with your eyes
When you smile make sure the smile reaches your eyes. Without that little twinkle in your eye your smile appears fake and people don't react as positively to you. Making your eyes "smile" is especially important when you ARE faking the smile.

Re: How to be a Better Human Being
Too bad for all the off-topic posts. I was really hoping to better myself by reading posts of other people!
I don't really think you can appreciate the advice of other people and implement them in your life to change yourself, maybe it looks like you could do that now, but when the situation arises you'll just respond like you've responded all your life so far. Change comes from experience, not from advice.
So until you've experienced certain things that would make you change, you won't change. No matter how good your intentions are or how motivated you are to change this based on "cool" advice of your internet heroes.
That's just all in my own experience ofcourse.

How loudly can you shout Tom? Shouting normally shuts kids up

Re: How to be a Better Human Being
A good teacher never shouts. Shouting implies you've lost control and are resorting to verbal aggression. A good teacher raises their voice. There is a subtle difference!
(but yeah, I occasionally shout at the little bastards. it's quite amusing as i save it for "special" occasions and watching them jolt up in fear almost makes me crack up and ruin the whole moment)

Re: How to be a Better Human Being
Self-improvement is and in all seriousness people should try to identify ways they and others can better themselves. But there's a cultural reluctance which exists in some to making value judgements "against" other people's lives/ifestyles. This probably originated from a quite just opposition to the control exerted by the major religions and the strict codes that accompanied them, but it's not clear whether this reluctance is still always justified.
Anyway we're all too cool for any of that nonsense and besides, who'd want to take advice from a drug addict / Dutch man / bed-wetter / alcoholic / gym freak / fan of the books of Ayn Rand etc, etc?

Re: How to be a Better Human Being
I wouldnt take advice from a Ayn Rand-fan, but I would be open for advice from the others, even the alcoholic.
Personally, Im not so sure I have that much to improve in how I behave against others. On the other hand, improving my studies and so on, there is lots to do.

I've started enjoying simple cocktails that involve mint leaves, but I'm afraid to do it anywhere but 'exclusive' bars in Ed. Give me a recipe and I'll love you long-time and so on.

Re: How to be a Better Human Being
Mojito's?
Isn't that simply Rum and ice with mint and lime?
A couple of people were drinking shitloads of them at a party i had in march. And then I was drinking them in a bar in Spain a month ago...
The ones at the party degenerated when we ran out of rum so we turned to gin, then when that ran out it turned to tequila...
But the mint was pretty constant!

A recipe for a good mojito could indeed turn this thread into something useful. As opposed to the self-indulgent, self-righteous and indeed hypocritical shit-fest Tomkat had intended.

I don't see how either of those behaviours would be particularly virtuous. They both seem to rely on taking a reasonable principle to idiotic extremes.
