Duron 1300+
My gf has a Duron1300 cpu/mobo (build in)
she tested it and it only showed about 900mhz in windows, that's normal?
I called the shop where I got it and some not too bright guy mumbling about that the performance is still 1300 etc.
That's correct? and if not, any possible way to make it as fast as it should have been?

Well, Durons are measured in GHz, as far as I've known; the Duron 1.4 is a 1.4GHz chip for example.
The Athlon XP 2100+, though, is really a 1.9GHz (or whatever it is) chip with equiv performance to a 2.1GHz P4. Apparantly.
So unless it was a Duron 1.3, there's nothing much you can argue with as 1300+ isn't the clockspeed.

Durons should show the right clockspeed tbh.
Prolly a multiplier ****up, check the BIOS and/or the manual for the board, it'll be a jumper somewhere that's set wrong

to be fair, with a decent (read :512mb) of ram, and a gf4 card in that box, it would be a semi-decent pc for all BUT playing the latest games on.
cos this amd800 512mb with a gf2 in it is currently what im using, and this is cool for all but the latest stuff

I assume that it's this board. In which case the 900MHz rating is indeed correct.

well ok, so it runs on 900mhz
the next problem is, she runs win2k on it, having a Gforce2 and she encounters a lot of graphic bugs and the system crashes each now and then.

could be a million things. win2k is VERY stable as far as os's go though, so its probably either a driver issue or a hardware conflict.
Be sure to update the gfx drivers, directx etc.

Wtf?
The whole point of the way modern PCs are designed is upgradability. Onboard sound and graphics is ok because they can be disabled and decent components can be bought to replace them when necessary, but hardwiring the processor in?
Dumb....

Not the same thing, but conceptually...

got all the windows updates applied too ?
win2k does usually give an error when it crashes unless its set to reboot, in which case right-click My Computer, properties, advanced , Startup and Recovery - untick Automatically reboot.
it'll then give you a blue screen error which might or might not help in finding the problem.

Belgy: Yes but I can't move it there cos I don't have mod powers on this one
Pab: MiniITX, as you say, ain't the same thing. That's more for those PC-in-the-lounge type projects and tends to involve specialist silent (ie. fanless) processors. And even then, they're not hardwired afaik.

The procs in the VIA EPIA boards are hardwired I think.
They at least can't be changed. They're embedded.

Fair enough.
Still totally different purpose though.
That's just a board basicly built for companies who want to flog cheap nasty pcs with as little hassle as possible.
The only thing you need to add to the board is some RAM and then you have a functioning pc - plug a couple of drives in, connect the monitor, keyboard and mouse and off you go.
Just don't buy it as a lasting unit because when it's outdated there's nothing you can do about it. Plus its mdae by ECS who tend to fall into my "wouldn't buy from" category after a board of thiers I had burnt out and I subsequently found numerous stories of reliability issues surrounding thier products.
Think I've slated it enough yet?

on a side note, anyone seen the via C3 processors ?
totally passive cooling only required, though 900mhz was the fastest one i've seen.

Is the C3 not what's used in the EPIAs?
They aren't particularly good for anything other than DVDs and MPEG/mp3 decoding.
It fits well as a digital media player, not much else. Benchmarks have it blown out of the water by equivalent Durons and Celerons.

It doesn't have to be fast to sit under your TV and decode divxs.
Which is the general idea of these pc-in-the-lounge jobbies.

The form factor makes it very handy.
It's a shame the proc's ****.
A LAN rig with that in would be rather smart, especially things like that Dreamcast mod on mini-itx.com.
Small.
