i had a first gen mp3 cd player. it was horrible and bulky and mangled CDs. the recent ones seem to be about normal discman size however.

The discman is hardly pocket sized.

I got my Zen micro today. I'm impressed by it, but it was not cheap :/

Re: cheap mp3 players?
On the CD vs MD discussion.
Re-recordable CDs cost more than or about the same as an MD. The catch is the number of times you can re-record them. CDs start crapping out on you at about the 7th time, MDs can be re-written over 2000 times error free.
A CD takes 4 times the space of an MD, a portable cd player isn't pocketable, CD players eat batttery on an impressive rate that can get you pissed with the constant swap of batteries. The MDs are smaller, pocket friendly and run way longer with the same ammount of batteries. In fact an MD player uses one AA battery at a time while CD players use at least two and even with two they suck 'em dry earlier than the MD's one.
In overall the MD player is better than a CD player. But when you add the current MP3 players in the game it is a question of taste and balance of use. My choice is the MD.

most coat/jacket/trouser pockets will fit one, albeit not snugly. The point is, it's still portable enough.

Re: cheap mp3 players?
That is still at the very least the size of a CD, which is too big for running or going to the gym with.

not with any kind of belt clip though (which, if you would be using it, is plenty cheap and practical)
