Throwing money at Hurricanes
According to the media, the magical underwater city of New Orleans needs my money for relief operations. Being a relativly apathetic person, I gave them nothing.
But if I did want to donate, who should I donate to?
There are litterally thousands of retail chains and corporations attempting to climb aboard the bandwagon.
For instance I note that Avon is now selling this keyring for only $5 - of which $3.75 will go directly to god knows where.
Now why would a pyramid scheme like Avon sell this rubbish? You might suggest it is out of the goodness of their heart; some form of corporate social responsibility. Perhaps it is a great marketing gimmick, or more cynically an excellent way to open a sales dialogue with people, in order to sell them more useless junk.
Are companies like Avon 'cashing in' by doing this? Obviously not in the direct sense, they gain no profits from the keyring; but whats wrong with simply donating to the Red Cross?

Avon are donating money to the Katrina fund? wow, what a nice company - I am going to tell my friends about this - 40% of whom are women, 100% of which wear make up, 30% of which are equally touched by their kindness, compelling them to make their next purchase(s) with Avon.
Ever wondered why the Avon lady walks funny?

Re: Throwing money at Hurricanes
that was a pretty bad joke
I'd find some official, well known charity and donate to them if they're helping out, as Flavius suggested. There will always be official-sounding scam companies otherwise.
So, either the Red Cross or, for example, www.giveappocomoney.com/katrina * is soon going to be up with donations accepted in most forms.
*obviously kidding

Obviously some do not understand what a rhetorical question is.
I don't want to know where to donate, I don't intend to donate; these two things are clear.
Try again.

I think the companies are trying to a) be seen to be trying to help b) trying to cash in.
Some funds are set up especially to help with disasters such as this, and some people prefer to donate to these rather than long standing companies as then their money is guarenteed to go to this specific cause. A certain amount of them spring up automatically, to allow you more than one method of donating money.
The companies want to be part of this, and so by offering things which also donate money to the current disaster, they shift stock (despite not getting much/any profit on it), get a slightly better reputation, and *allow* the customer to purchase other things at the same time. "While i'm getting this keyring I might get some bath soaps and ....." or however people think when they're reading their Avon magazines.

Re: Throwing money at Hurricanes
Why should we give money to the US when things like this are blatently more important.
I hate the way the 'big' disasters like the tsunami and hurricane Katrina are diverting money away from areas that it is needed a hell of a lot more.

Re: Throwing money at Hurricanes
For the public opinion there are always a few rules, one is out of sight, out of heart.
This makes structural problems like Darfur, Malawi, Zimbabwe and the likes far difficult to cope. If for instance HIV would give good gross pictures people would donate a lot more to contribute to various organizations battling it. But instead they give an overkill of attention to relatively minor incidents.
Examples: The city of Bam got distroyed a few years ago, killing over 20 thousand, noone ever talked about that, however we still here crap being spouted about the 9/11 attack while the damage there was relatively low, only the massive ego of the US was hurt.
The attacks in London were in terms of damage barely succesful, while the media made it worthwhile for them.
Out of sight, out of heart, and if you can make good television out of it, do it.
Call in 'experts', drag the topic with you over and over and over again.
It is rather silly.

The thing is, money actually makes a difference to the cleanup of hurricanes/tsunamis, while money has been thrown at Africa for decades and it is still shit.

Re: Throwing money at Hurricanes
There are only a few hurricanes still flying. I doubt anyone will thank you for throwing money at them, especially coins that will damage the skin.
Be warned kids!

Re: Throwing money at Hurricanes
You are correct about that, but the point made, which you do not tackle at all, was that the media often overhypes certain situations.

I was just pointing out that your example was a poor one. If "noone ever talked about" the earthquake in Bam, we would not remember the catastrophe.
It would be difficult to argue with the statement, "The media often overhypes certain situations."
What surprises me is that people follow the media's lead.

No shit Sherlock.
But at least that way they'll feel nice and cozy that your posting style hasn't changed and the reason they had you on ignore was the right choice in the first place.
Consider it a public service of sorts.
