[Politics]Good articles?
I would like some recommendations of good aticles on broad topics rather than individual case studies.

I have just spent the best part of an hour arguing with my flatmate about various topics but the one I'm most interested in is the issue of the dole (unemployment benefit for the non-Brits).

the arguments against have so far been

'it's not hard to get a job.'

'there are plenty of jobs out there, people should get any job rather than sit on their arses in the pub feeling sorry for themselves.'

One of my other flatmates believes that the dole should only be paid out for six months or so.

Do you have any recommendations which cover this topic?

Any help would be appreciated.

Simple : Youre not here for 5 years, you cant get Unemployment Benefit.

Introduce that in the UK (Must be resident for 5 years) and hey presto, you get rid of the economic migrants.

Yes, its a bit shit for the genuine asylum seekers, but those same asylum seekers will be more likely to actually want to work.

It depends what you're trying to argue. I don't mean the position you want to adopt, but the end result that you can bargain with. There's no point arguing that reducing benefits would increase child poverty if the person involved in the debate simply doesn't care about child poverty.

Anyway, in the UK the Joseph Rowntree Foundation produces quite a few papers on welfare economics and so forth. I don't have any specifics to hand though.

We had a discussion about this the other day in my flat. The right wingers were arguing firstly how bad Britain was doing. Then they said we should scrap the dole. Then they said its easy to get a job etc.

Anyway the point I made was I dont really care about abuse of the welfare system, worse abuse takes place in tax etc. As I said to some of my friends Im pleased that we have a system we can abuse, rather than no system at all.

Yes it is?

I know several unemployed people, and not one of them 'sits on their arse in the pub feeling sorry for themselves'. On the contrary, they spend most of their time either at the job centre or going round local businesses looking for work. They can't afford to be in the ****ing pub.

I'm not saying this applies to everyone. There are of course dole bludgers and lazy ****s and whatever they hell else you want to call them. But it's not as simple as it appears on the surface, especially in a tourist town.

I dont know for sure, but if you have access to Jstor then i imagine they would have quite a lot of politics articles, proper ones. The sheer volume of them SHOULD give you something you can use.

Though the situation in York probably isnt so bad as oban, but most folks i know that have jobs here travel 20-30 miles for it
