Hard-Drive slow?

I'm copying files from my main drive over to my back-up and the "copying" rates are frustratingly slow - so slow my system is VERY slow during the copy. My old Western Digital drive which used to be my backup drive copied over MUCH, MUCH faster - how comes this isn't the case now?

I have a Maxtor ATA100 120GB (backup) drive and I've connected a Maxtor ATA133 200GB (main) drive on the same cable which is split for 2 drives etc. (which only supports up to ATA100) - reason being, I don't have a ATA133 IDE connector or controller (although there should be).

Is there anything I can do? Would buying a ATA133 cable and connecting it through my standard ATA100 IDE connector be ok? Should I buy a ATA133 DMA controller and see if that helps?

Thanks all.

Re: Hard-Drive slow?

check windows isnt being retarded and running each drive in pio mode, you should be able to check this from control panel-> system -> device manager -> ide controllers (or similar )
check under the advanced settings tab

Re: Hard-Drive slow?

According to disk defrag, neither of my drives need to be defragmented :|

Re: Hard-Drive slow?

Try to put them on seperate IDE channels? temporarily remove a CD-drive or something to free up your other IDE slot and try it on there...

I've never tried backing up from 1 internal HD to the other, always from 1 computer to my 'back-up' machine (aka, machine with big HD and FTP :P)

from what I can see

Secondary
master - HDD @ ATA33 (UDMA2)
secondary - HDD @ ATA33 (UDMA2)

if you're transfering data between the two drives on the secondary channel its going to be a tad slow because 1. the two drives are on the same cable and 2. ATA33 mode

try increasing the UDMA mode to 5, could be the cable is old, i hear some old ones only allow 1 device @ ATA100/UDMA5, if you add another they both default to udma2 :|

Cheers mate - I'll look into it when Windows next crashes... scheduled in 3 hours by the random freezes.
