linux sound problems

Hi I've just recently got my new mobo its a nforce 4 with a realtek alc655 chipset.
I've tried many things to get my onboard soundcard working and no joy..
I've checked the settings in alsamixer and seem to be up.
The mobo is a ECS a754 if that helps

I've done a fresh install with ubuntu breezy 5.10 and basicaly someone could point me to where I'm going wrong with this.
Its quite important I get this soundcard working as I've only got 3 pci slots.
One gets covered by the cooler for my graphics card use the middle slot and then I'll be covering over the cooler.
Last slot I have my scsi card inplace basicaly leaves me with just pci-e left and I haven't got the money to spend on a pci-e sound card.

Excuse me for my stupidity I've usually just installed and working out of the box this is a whole new experience for me.

Thanks in advance

Most hardware should just work - you might want to complain on the Ubuntu forums or file a bug. That said, what are you using to play sound? Could it be that another application is blocking the device? You can use dmix to solve that. Does the card work in Windows?
