How to check or enable DMA mode for USB drive

Hello there,
I have an external USB hard drive. I doubt its transfer speed and want to check its DMA mode. I know how to check and enable DMA mode for IDE drives in XP. But totally no idea how to do it for an external hard drive. The drive has an IDE interface in a USB enclosure.
Anyone knows how to determine its mode, and enable the proper mode if necessary?

Many thanks

Re: How to check or enable DMA mode for USB drive

USB1 or USB2 ? (both the diskdrive itself and the port its plugged into )
usb1 is limited to 11mbit/s at the best of times, usb2 has up to 480mbit/s and this may be the root cause of any slowness
as for the dma mode, im not sure if USB disks have them - but it'l be under device manager, the hd controller if anything

Re: How to check or enable DMA mode for USB drive

Sorry for the confusion. It's a USB Hi-speed enclosure. The port is also USB 2.0 supported. I tested the speed before and no problem with Hi-speed transfer. I looked into Device Manager. In the Disk Drives, it does show this drive, but no information about DMA mode.

Re: How to check or enable DMA mode for USB drive

try running a disk benchmarking util on your main ( ie non-usb ) disk, and the usb disk
it could just be that the usb disk is fragmented too tho

ive been experimenting with the usb flash disk ive got to see if i can find anything which can help, but ive not
ofc it could also be that flash disks dont do dma mode
