Database Licences

Not a strictly technical query, but software licence related :

We're getting an application based on an Sybase (SQL) backend. Sybase will run on a server obviously, and then various machines will have clients installed on them to use said database. For each machine we're installing the application on, we need a SQL licence (or for each user) which costs something like £120 per person.

The database will contain some general information that will be useful to a far wider range of people than just the users (maybe 300 people to see the data, only about 10 actual proper users). Could I (legally) just use a PHP/Apache style solution to ODBC to the db for simple read queries so all 300 could see some of the data without buying 300 seperate licences?

Sorry this is such a stupid question, but I'm genuinely unsure how restrictive these licences are.

What exactly does the license cover?

I don't think you can. I read the Sybase licence agreement (you can find it easily at sybase.com), and specifies you need concurrent user licences for everyone who wants to access the database at any point. You wouldn't need to purchase 300, probably only 50, because not all 300 possible people will use it at once. However, I don't think you can legally use a workaround like you suggested.

Licencing agreements are horrific to decipher sometimes - I work as a Software Compliance Manager, and so part of my job is this bollocks. Companies often make it intentionally difficult to decipher, so that people buy more than they need, just in case, and thus company makes more money.

How utterly gay. I suppose I could just do a 24hr dump to MySQL or a .CSV file.

Re: Database Licences

Yeah I know, that side of things isn't a problem. It's the Sybase side of things I'm worried about (which the program has to run on unfortunately).

Yeah, that would be fine, they can't restrict what you do with data access once it's outside their software's storage.

Now imagine dealing with scenarios like this 5 days a week, especially when it's always software that you've never heard of and you don't have a clue who licenses or manufactured it because it's so specialised (Oh the joys of working for the Met Police!)

Re: Database Licences

As Supernova9 says, the license limits concurrent users of the database at any one point in time.

If you're doing some sort of web based solution, then its very unlikely the number of concurrect connections to the database will be that high. Lets say 10 people have a page open, refreshing every 60 seconds. Unless all connect at the very same time then the chances are you'll only have one connection to the database at a time.

You could use some PHP script to limit access to the database to just one page loading at a time. Assuming most queries execute within hundredths of a second, then this wouldn't be a problem.

I'm not entirely sure if the license would allow this, as I'm a little confused with the license agreement.
