Its a symptom of the modern academic structure. When you base a large amount of people's pay on the amount of 'new stuff' they write, youre going to end up with a very large amount of worthless crap being outputted. Pretty much all academic disciplines seem to suffer from this, some more than others.
Paying people to dig holes and then fill them in used to be considered a joke.

I'm sure the calculation is perfectly fine. It's the random assignment of probabilities and the trumped-up "importance" of earthbound events that give me problems.
I also found it quite funny that the bookies are taking bets on there being a second coming. Very forward-thinking, seeing as if it does happen nobody will be collecting.

Yes, but I accept that using the passive voice in that context was poor grammar.
edit: actually I'm not sure. I think the using passivity there was grammatically correct, but it makes the sentence read 'funny'.
