You need to select them (using one of the keys, can't remember which) and then place them using Space. Same with all the secondary weapons.

actually, plasma gun from the start and repair the castle whenever you damn feel like it, so long as you have plenty of plasma rifle ammo. i fired less than 200 shots on level 20 and took <100 points to the castle.
