I'm surprised it was chosen, considering it was submitted by a Berlin-based architect.
Don't they have laws agaisnt nefarious individuals who associate with Germans designing buildings there?
Obviously The US hasn't quite descended to that sort of petty jingoistic level just yet.

I wouldn 't exactly call it original.
It would have been nice if we had used the fall of the WTC to put something attractive in there.
The only difference between the old and the new is that the new has curves.

I've got to say it looks better than all of the other designs they were considering, at least.

It is horrendous. Who thought up such an ugly design? It seems building designs are going the way of cars, uglier every year.

Yes, but I think the architects were to concerned with demonstrating thier "artistic" abilities at the expense of creating a truly beautiful building.

It's the Vertical World Gardens according to the other pics there, interesting design. Although I'm sure the main reason for it is so it can be the world's tallest building again.

Daniel Libeskind IS ACTUALLY insane. The building is full of gimmicks (such as, I believe, the height in feet of the building at 1776ft to represent American Independance Day) and is horrendous to look at.
To say he hasn't designed most, if any of the inside yet is also testamount to the irrelevence of archtiectural competitions.
And yes, it was sadly the best looking design of the lot :/

Its an absolute travesty of a building, and I cant believe someone is paying to erect it. "hey guys, lets put a ****ING GIGNORMOUS POLE ON TOP OF THE BUILDING, HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE? What use does it have you say? Who cares, we're being post-modern!"
The United Architects one was far better.

I think an overcomplicated and unthought through building is totally unsuitable for the home of modern economics.

just wondering, and maybe im missing something very crucial and im a bit thick, but i dont get the point of putting gardens 1000ft in the air. The space looks quite limited, i have a feeling that its going to end up as naff potted plants and stuff. But isnt the entire point of being 1000ft in the air to look out over the skyline??? why put gardens up there???

It combines having the highest building in the world, on the location of the previous WTC, incorporating a symbol of unity in the form of gardens representing all areas around the world.
It's actually the one part about the concept I particularly like.

I don't know what the exact trade off will be between Libeskind's creative arty-fartyness, and actual practicality, but he doesn't seem to take it to the anti-people extremes of design some people do.

It's not really a mass grave. There are no bodies buried there.
I think NYC should build a tower so tall that you don't need to launch rockets to get satellites into orbit. You just go up to the roof of the new WTC and toss the satellite into space.

Osama bin Laden wants me to build a WTC that reaches to the edge of outer space? I am fairly certain Osama bin Laden is not even aware of my existence, but if he is, he must think I have a lot of money based on your comment. All of my savings put together would not even buy me the crappiest apartment in Lower Manhatten. Buying land there and building a skyscraper is completely out of the question. I might be able to borrow enough money to build a small house in Texas somewhere, but a skyscraper... It ain't gonna happen.

no i meant that osama bin laden wants you to build that ginormous tower at great expense so that he can fly another plane into it and take out all of manhattan thereby doing the job properly.
He told me so, i talked to him on AOL the other night

You has a lot of meanings. You could mean all of the people in the British Commonwealth. You could mean the beef-producing nations of the world. You could mean the people who live on the continent of Africa. You has so many meanings that it has no meaning.
When someone quotes me and says "you," I can only assume the person quoting "me" means me and not, for example people who eat only vegetables.
You, Sub, are a person who thinks that the meanings of what other people say are obvious.
Osama bin Laden may want NYC to build a giant skyscraper at the place of the WTC. I have no idea what he wants. He and I have not discussed the idea.
The real answer should have been "That is what Osama bin Laden wants New York City to do, " not "funnily enough that's exactly what Osama Bin Laden wants you to do as well."
People should just say what they mean, rather than say something they expect people to understand because it is "so obvious" what they really meant.

I still do not have enough money to build anything in New york City. Quit saying Osama bin Laden expects me to do so. He does not know who I am. He does not expect me to build anything in NYC.

hello Gordon, whilst i agree with your assesment, the pole isnt redundant, since it makes the building 'tall'.
But yes it is stupid and ugly.

The best thing would be to:
Use the old design..
Showing the world, that they can come back as nothing happend to them..
But then again, they are just to stupid..

Why are you making such a big deal out of this? It was obvious to most people exactly what he was on about. I'm sure we've had this discussion before about 'knowing what people mean by what they write, even if they aren't blatantly obvious'. If you consider all the variables for what 'you' could have been, I think you'll find only one makes actual sense.
