The Ring
A cunning movie that is. Scary too, wich can be seen as a merit for a horrorfilm. It may sound dumb, 'a video that kills', but it's actually very clever. And, interesting. From beginning to the end, it's prolly one of the most clever horrorfilms I've seen, and even if it ain't the Exorcist, it's really worthy to see.
I'm not going to spoil more, but I'm tempted to. It's a brilliant movie, the only reason why I wouldn't rank it the best horror I've seen is the fact that it lacks the Exorcist's religious approach (I've always been interested in Satanism/Exorcism/Spirits, and Bible Legends).

This was one movie I have to say I just didn't get.
Bunch of people start watching a tape with amatuer video of some insane ladie's antics. Said lady owned horses that all died or something while her daughter got too close to a well one day and drowned in it.
One woman in particular who watches the tape gets paranoid and starts trying to deconstruct the thing, in the process all her friends start dying around her and a fly from the video comes to life through the TV which when she touches it her nose bleeds.
I missed most of the end of the movie so tell me.. just wtf was it supposed to be about?

actually i thought it was pretty wank.
Didn't find it scary.
Yes we were talking about it, trying to figure it out for a bit, but I must say i was disappointed by it in general.
Especially after people were saying they were **** scared by it.

they save the poor little girl from where she got dumped, and so she can finally RIP.
it really does all fit together when you see the end, but it's kinder a 'mystery story' until you get there.
but there's very little discussion to be had about it, that's one of the things that annoyed me. they explain everything so much at the end instead of letting you figure it out.
anyway, it was a very stupid movie that actually fit together great, and was truly viciously scary if you could get past how stupid it was.

It's not over though. I thought it was a verry good film and I can't wait for the next two which they will hopefully make. The Ring was originally a Japanese film and there are three of them so hopefully they will al be remade.

well that explains some of it, but what about the tape?
What is it about the tape that causes people to die (who or what is doing it, and how?)?
Or is that part if the 'we wont tell you and just let you ponder it for yourself' parts of the movie?

there simply is not that much to explain about the movie. toward the end they explain every little detail, which was even annoying.
movies should really let the audience figure it out (like donnie darko, except that there really wasn't a 'correct' solution there anyway:/)

you would have to be both blind and deaf and legally brain dead in order to finish watching the movie without knowing how the movie kills people.

In answer to above, the ring was the light from the edges of the circular cover stone on the well.
... Did I like the film? Not in the slightest. I thought it was wank. Films based 90% on suspense just dont do it for me. About as scary as a bananna.

It was based on the Japanese film called Ringu, Ringu means the sound a phone makes when it rings. But since all the promo for the Hollywood version contains "Before you die you see the ring" I guess it could be either.

I just saw it, and found it good, not the best movie out there, but nice! And quite scary.
The fun thing, is that nobody here (at least not all) have understood it the way i did..they did not rescue the girl, they set her even more loose?

The end explained the plot a lot - well, after they buried the girl the real reasoning started coming up.
Exactly Snurx, as the little boy said "Don't you get it? She never sleeps. You weren't supposed to save her!", wich one should've realized from the shrink's interview video where Samara said "I'm sorry. It won't stop", referring to the fact that it will never stop, as long as the vids remain. And as long as someone watches the vid, he'll have to pass it on to someone else in order to avoid dying.

Yes, they do explain a lot, but many seem to misinterpret their explanations. Did you skip the end of the film, too, or partially ignore it? The girl wasn't supposed to be helped, to RIP, as she never will.
Duh.
Well, we all have our opinions on it, on the result, and it very much depends on our intepretion of the film on how we react to it. If you feel it was the 'catch' to help the girl to make 'it stop', you seem to have misunderstood it though. If she had been 'okay', or 'resting in peace' after getting buried, why did she continue haunting? Doesn't make sense to me, Acropolis.

Yes, a good kick-in-the-head might have done 'it'.

I've seen it yesterday evening.
I can only say that it is very brilliant compared to what we have seen in the past year. It won't get an oscar for acting, but for best director, perhaps.
The ring obviously has multiple meanings to it (I would not be surprised if there were three), I thought before the movie that "The Ring" actually meant the circle of people that shared the tape among them.
I was amazed by the fat plot, I thought it would be just another hollywood basement movie, and after seeing other movies this year that spent millions on sci-fi-ish effects (Minority report et co) I must say the choice of a simple VCR tape as the sole carriage of suspense is in my opinion masterful in concept, but also in the way it has been filmed/directed. The short piece of film that we know is on the tape, is also video footage that should belong in an audiovisual museum. I think they hired a very very expensive firm to make those 3 minutes...
As for the story itself, it has the aftertaste of incompletion and I hope the story will continue. I wonder what special circumstances were there in the line of Samaras conception. And I wonder how the tape was made.
The one thing I actually did NOT get was that they were looking for the psych files of the mum, but found footage of the daughter. That was a bit weak in my opinion.
The general aftertaste was good and the film left me thrilled.

i'm going to post again that my post was an attempt to avoid ruining the movie for those who haven't seen it.
if you all want to post your spoilers, then at least have the common decency to sart your post off with " spoiler: do not read if you haven't seen the movie"
this part of the post may contain spoilers, read at your own risk

About where Samara came from, one part of the movie that bothered me (in the good way that horror should bother you) was the claim that people can be born simply truly evil like that.
The tape they kind of explained, but it was one of the few things that they didn't have one of the characters specifically outright tell the audience. You see in the video of her talking with the psychiatrist about those negatives developed. Apparently, one of her special evil abilities is to develop film just by thinking. So a crowning achievement would obviously be a complete movie.
Lastly, when they got to the ward I was of the impression that they were looking for the daughter's record. They had found out that the couple had had a daughter just before, and they had just discovered that the daughter had spent a lot of time in that ward.

The original wasnt written as a one film type thing, it was written as a two parter (Ring 0 is crap btw)
So in converting it as closely as possible for an japanese to american style, it's also been left with unexplained bits for the sequel.
Resident Evil film all over again.

I've been there and done it.
I went to the movies to see it a second time last thursday and video-marathoned the japanese three with a few mates friday.
I swear I saw a long haired girl with a white dress every time I went to sleep since.
Anyway: the quality issue. I can only say the hollywood trilogy will be more freaky to see, since the image quality and butget of those really by far outreach the japanese two 1998 movies.
The stories are slightly different, but only to come to terms with cultural differences. I did not find them disturbing, but the people who did not understand the flying people in 'crouching tiger hidden dragon' will have to prepare for some weird ESP type things.
Ringu 0 (2000) is a true eyeopener since ringu 2 reveals some facts that really puzzle you. After seeing 2 I was glad we postponed the marathon until we could rent ringu0. it is video-quality-wise the best movie, and I shudder in awe to think what The Ring 0 will be like once it is made in a hollywood basement.
Basically, I would have to differ with Jboy on some issues, but it alltogether was greatly worth the watch.

I saw it, and thought it was okay. The gayest bit was the fact that I thought it had finished, needed a piss, wanted to leave after an enjoyable film, and then was told by somebody that had already seen it, that there was 30 minutes to go. Then came a gay plot twist, and the best character was killed.
