There is no standard use for the key. The BIOS keyboard routines in INT 16 simply ignore it; therefore so do the DOS input routines in INT 21 as well as the keyboard routines in libraries supplied with high-level languages.

Thus your program is free to use SysRq for its own purposes.




Not my writing, but the 1st thing that came up on Google. (Oh the difficulty :/).

Though clearly now a days its the Print Screen key, which on Windows at least, saves a copy of the screen to the clipboad.

Short for System Request if I remember right. It's hooked into interrupt 15 somewhere (can't remember AX values) and you can set up your own interrupt handler for that key to do whatever you want with it. Used to be great for debugging purposes, you could set up sysrq to dump all registers (or whatever other variables/whatever you wanted) to the screen at the press of a button. Great for those times you didn't have TDB handy

PX XT BIOS 11/08/82
Carry flag set: AH = 86h

All others
AL = 00h, key pressed
AL = 01h, key released

BIOS calls this function whenever the System Request key (Alt-Print Screen) is pressed or released.
