Now, i know you all clicked on this thread because you think you are one of the other "cynics". For some reason its popular to be one. There arent that many people i'm referring to here.

I have a very simple question for you, which stems from my belief that you may not in fact, exist, in the way other humans do. You're cynical about conventions and actions.. and well, everything. Simple question. Do you believe in love and what it does to people, or is it merely a convention as well?

I doubt you're referring to me, but anyway : Obviously love exists in the form of some kind of psychological reaction. There's various studies on the subject.

What do you mean by "believe in love"? Even if you're anti-love (whatever that means) then I doubt many people believe no-one else feels it.

It's like "beliving in religion" or something. I don't believe in God, I don't think religion is a useful framework of ideas, but it's madness to presume no-one else does (merely based on the evidence).

1) I'm not a cynic.

2) I dont think the word 'love' as most people use it today has any meaning whatsoever. People have a habit of 'wearing out' words, and 'love' is one of the best examples of this - most people dont really know what they mean when they use the term, and I'd go as far to say its become utterly meaningless in most contexts. In a non-linguistic sense however, I most definitely have a conception of love (the idea of 'believing in love' doesnt really make much sense, since it seems to imply that 'love' is some kind of entity which has external existence, which is silly), but the definition I'd use for it would probably be slightly different from most peoples. I think 99% of what people today call 'love' and do 'in its name' is bullshit for instance, and I'd object utterly to the normal "love involves dependence/is unselfish/is a good reason to get married/is irrational/should be shared with others/etc", or anything else which cheapens or devalues something which is incredibly important to me. Romantic poetry kind of turns my stomach too

those that disregard love or object to it in the correct kinda terms, are likely to be those that have never had love, given love or those that can only remember love in memories, rather than in reality

love is the meaning of life!

love is the single greatest and powerfulest emotion to exist, even more so than jealousy

love can be the driving force behind anything, and can be adapted, even if the love its aimed at isn't responding with it back

I think love is too broad a word now. It can be used to describe so many things, and like Nodrog said, is too overused.

Nobody's really a cynic or else you'd just sit in your room denying everything and starving to death*. You can be cynical in relation to various areas of thought though which is just another way of saying you support the unconventional approach.

I feel somewhat suprised i managed to get through this thread without the obligatory "ooh our little deffehs all grown up and is in love" reply.

The reason i directed it towards you nod, (and to a lesser extent you dante, cause i know you're married), was because you seem to take everything down to the rational and i was wondering if id get a "love is a convention / convenience / logical step to reproducing and spreading genes" argument going.

One of the things people miss from the Evo-Psych arguments is that even if they're totally true, it makes very little difference.

If I see a girl, it's irrelevent that I am "only" finding her attractive because she is the right age/shape/health. It doesn't change the strength of the attraction. Similarly with love. Even if we can show love to be a mere side-effect of pair-bonding, why would this matter?
