Re: Bestest Dictators in history.
Napolean seemed pretty cool to me, as he was actually a fairly decent general (as I understand) as well as being a despot, unlike others like Stalin who was pretty much just a party politician.
Oh and Mao. He did the civil war business and had the little red book. My mum had a copy of that when I was about 5.

Lenin, for having the balls to lead a revolution and then defy popular and political opinion to create a one-party state and still have that state survive for the best part of a century (albeit as largely a third world country, which wasn't all his fault...).
Generally overlooked because Stalin killed more people, but he's my 'favourite' dictator

By definition the Soviet Block was "the second world". The Industrialised west were the first, them the second, and the rest were the third.
Besides, the living standards in Russia weren't really comparable to most of Africa, Asia, etc.

Quite true, but the Soviet Block had the potential to be considerably more than it reached...

I might have to give the nod to Simón Bolívar in that regard.

Wasn't Bolivar actually President of Gran Colombia, and thus pretty ineligible for consideration?

Hmmm, I can't believe I forgot about Fidel.
40+ years and still going. He seems relatively popular (internationally at least). Not many dictators can say that.

Well, he kept flirting with democracy. He couldn't make up his mind if he wanted to be a dictator or a democratically-elected president. I think he finally decided on 'President for Life,' but by then the South Americans were done with him.

Trotsky was an idiot. Just like 99% of those who call themselfs trotskist today.
I vote for V.I. Lenin and Mao. And Tito for forcing the serbs, croats, bosnians, albanians and the rest to live to gether peacefully.

Tito was a shit, politically, like all the rest of them; he was just nuanced in his excercise of power, which most prominent dictators aren't.

Julius Caesar, for the reason that most people don't even think of him as a dictator anymore (if any substantial number of people ever really did).
