Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 source code leaked

At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.
This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about.
We ask that for the wider benefit of the IT community that members and readers support Microsoft by forwarding anything they know about the leak to the Microsoft's Anti-Piracy department.
Please do not post any links/screenshots/hints or anything to do with the source code outbreak. Discussion is allowed but we will not condone people spreading this source code.

This could start getting a little crazy, just think of all those cracker groups going mental with this source code.

Well, if it's recent, full source code, then the virus writers who come up with such joys as Klez, myDoom etc are going to have a field day.
It's impossible to say what the ramifications might be. But if the internet breaks in the next few weeks....you'll know why.
And that bbc news link...I read the post I got it from completely wrongly, my bad.

Aren't you designated to be essential personnel, and thus have access to The PA Bunker in such an eventuality as this?

I don't think you'll be able to pop off to Sainsbury's and buy some sparkling bottled water when the world is a bleak wasteland and the dead of the world form mountains, somehow.

Re: Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 source code leaked
Could this be by chance unliscenned circulation of portions of source code that MS aggreed to release per their Anti-Trust suit? Maybe even portions that MS has released to various goverment orginzations to analaze to make them feel warm and fuzzy that the OS is safe.

Considering the Windows source code is around 40Gb in size, it's not 'full' by a long shot.

Heh, yeah. What I meant by 'full', was if it has complete bit's of sub-systems in it or not. Certainly from what I've been reading there's a lot of IE, Explorer and some other bits and bobs in there.
(it was late last night when I posted )

Re: Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 source code leaked
It's only 15% of the source code they claim totallying 603 mb in size.
That is with regards to windows 2000
They've made no statement that any of the NT 4 code is out there, possibly because more businesses use that O/S and they don't need to discourage them onto linux just yet.

No, they extended it to fit Karm in though
Also i'm rather impressed by the fact that apparently the win2k source (and presumably the NT4 too) is littered with swearing.
Inspires so much faith

What is source code?
It is the raw computer language written by programmers as they put together an application. When a program is compiled to become a working program this code is scrambled and becomes unreadable.

in microsoft's case, unreadable by even the computer it is supposed to be running on.

Re: Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 source code leaked
Sensationalism ahoy!
At worse people find vulnerablilities and holes then MS patches them up and becomes a better OS for it.
I don't see why this is any different to say Linux.

It's different because they didn't mean to do it. If this is a good thing then MS could have released the source yonks ago.

Re: Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 source code leaked
Depends on the perspective. You're right they didn't mean to do it but it's out there now.
It's bad for MS mostly in terms of public image and a very minimal loss of profit. They didn't release the full source code publicly because there are security implications involved and it would cut into their licensing business that already allows certain organisations to view parts of the source code.
However, it is not the full source and I doubt there's anything major in what did slip out. Now that it is out if there are any oversights or bugs that their internal devs didn't pickup then at least they can start patching them up once the vulnerabilites are exposed.
