US terrorist threat warning
11:21am EST
The United States has just gone from a Yellow to Orange terrorist threat alert.
This is done in response to a credible and serious threat of attack. They have gone to Orange only once before this since September 11th, and though nothing happened, this was (we assume) because the threat was neutralised.
There will be a White Housepress conference at 1 pm EST likely on this topic.

Sometimes I dispair for the Canadian government.
Turns out we got this official notice only 11 minutes before it was posted on CNN. I am not sure who to blame for that...

Apparantly the US saw a man with a beard facing the east holding a butter knife and went to orange alert.
Turns out he was making a sandwich, we can all thank god and sleep easy knowing that we escaped from a potential disaster today.

CNN link.
It pretty much means nothing though, I spent half my teenage years living under Keenwind (RAFG equivalent of Bikini alert state) Amber (not good) and several times the Tahiti alert state (someone threatening us with mortars) was moved up to scarlet (direct attack anticipated). Alert states don't mean much at all, the terrorists don't leave you alone just because your alert state is high or low.

Declaring Alert status now and then is good for scaring the people into believing terrorists will soon be bombing their house.

Have to disagree, the US system only reacts to clear and believeable threat warnings. This was done in response to a specific piece of intelligence or information, and Orange altert is a big deal, just by going to Orange enormouse sums of money get spent, Emerg. centres are staffed 24_7, military base commanders across the US have a series of actions they have to take, civilian authorities are put on alert... Its a big deal, trust me.
In the 30 minutes since they went Orange, the US Government has probably expended flipping graet wodges of cash on readiness mobility and preparation.

Ditto the UK, all visitors to the camp met at the gates and escorted at all times, random armed patrols challenging people for their ID cards, to me it was just part of growing up. As a one off you can take it seriously but when it goes on and on it gets (for want of a better word) boring, routine even.

Seem is the key word here, as we don't, I've cringed everytime I heard about a terroist attack over seas. We aren't as "out of the loop" as you like to think.

I wouldn't particularly care if there was a terrorist attack in London (I'm English).

According to the government, the paranoia index is all the way up to 9.4... (See the government site at whitehouse.org at the right column.)
