08-05-2006 - Netgamers Explanation
This morning the entire NetGamers IRC network was accidentally g-lined, or globally banned, for an hour from 00:06 to 01:06 BST.
I can now explain what led to this;
A mistake was made in a g-line, which sometimes happens as opers are only human. Our operator services would under normal circumstances just ignore such mistakes, however this particular mistake unfortunately triggered a previously unknown bug in the service, and the command was processed, not ignored, resulting in the entire network population being banned.
The bug has now been identified and steps are being taken to ensure it cannot happen again.
I would like to apologise on behalf of the network for the disruption caused to Planetarion and its community.
