Typical techie type help required question for start of uni terms
So, I finally conned my PCT into funding my masters and am at york uni one day a week ( \o/ ). Now for purely accademic purposes obviously I'd like to use things like msn and all the other palava, but they have their computers locked down so tight in terms of admin access and not being able to instal things. They're using w2k.
suggestions?

MSN Webmessenger - if they actually have got someone who can lock down AD's policies correctly, then you're screwed trying to install stuff!
edit - Damn you Pabs, damn you to hell.

same here, at my uni you can't install anything that needs to put something in the system folders or registry.
Trillian installed with no problems, sometimes I just install something at home then just copy the folder to my uni filespace and run the program, some progs throw a fit if you do this however.
Last year though my uni installed MSN so everyone can use it since we can transfer large files (work) using it instead of using the email server. Then patch 1.1 came out and uni admins didn't update it and we couldn't get on MSN, gg

Stew, IE5 on Mac OS 9 said the same thing - it's not anti opera - it's retarded MS.

i seem to remember some success installing msn to my user area while i was there, and mirc worked perfectly, but i think the classrooms were still running '95 when i cared about them :P

Re: Typical techie type help required question for start of uni terms
well, I'm currently just using goodriges comps (or however you spell that), I live in Hull i just commute 1 day a week, it's just I've been living at the uni for 2 weeks, doing an intensive course (yes, it's an odd masters... I still work 4 days for my employer at the local west Hull PCT).
webmessenger you say....

e-messenger.com/net or something is an alternative too i believe.
ps, trillian if you can install anyway. or burn to cd and take with you.
i should mention at this point that i don't know shit about york uni, but i live with 3 graduates and a phd student from there.

Re: Typical techie type help required question for start of uni terms
you could do the silly thing, and drop by computer services and ask them if there's a way to get msn to run on the classroom pcs
as an asside, if you're doing health studies type stuff there's a nice pc classroom somewhere in alcuin that might be useful to you
