[UK] Battlestations, channel 4
Did anyone watch it earlier?
I was walking through the kitchen in search of food earlier, and one of my housemates must've left the TV on C4.
The bit I saw was footage of a mid-air collision between an F-15 and some other plane. The other plane fireballed straight away, but the F-15 was brought in to land safely despite having lost an entire wing, gushing fuel from the hole in the fuselage where the wing should be, and approaching the runway at twice the normal speed. How the hell a plane flies with a wing missing I have no idea, would've thought it was aerodynamicly impossible but there you go.
So I was just wondering if anyone knows what the program was actually about. Call me morbid, but I'm a bit of a fan of those disaster type shows if its one of them...

I didn't see the program, but it sounds like the collision between an Israeli F-15 and an A-4N Skyhawk during a training exercise over the Negev desert in 1983.
According to McDonnel Douglas it was (barely) possible because the fuselage generates a fair amount of lift.
Here's a photo.

I saw it, and that photo looks like the one in the programme.
Basically after thorough investigation, McDonnel Douglas came to the conclusion that since the F15 is wide-bodied and that if it was to travel fast enough you don't need wings to fly it.
Overall the program was ace, btw, I thought the F15 is was swing wing? Yet in the programme it was fixed, or is the F14 swing wing?

re: ****pit re-enactments
isn't it time this board set the **** free? Not only does it have many innocent meanings that end up being ridiculously censored, but even when it means penis, it's still only vulgar slang, and not an obscenity like the other banned words.

F14 Tomcat has the 'swing wing' design. Speed = wings in. Manoevarbility during dog fight = wings out.
F15 Eagle has fixed wing design
