Civil Service
This is mostly for T&F cause i don't know anybody else who's a civil servant anyways ...
anyways i have been recently reading EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMN POLICY NOTE ISSUE FROM OUR POLICY DEPARTMENT IN THE LAST 6 YEARS and one of them was talking about drinking and work.
Basically it says you're "not to be under the influence of alcohol whilst at work" but it does talk about going to the pub at lunch time as if it's ok as long as you're "not under the influence of alcohol".
Just wondering if your policy is the same.
ALSO how do you define "under the influence" in a legal sense (is it like 2 drinks or sommit)?

Re: Civil Service
Where I used to work, they used to frown on drinking at lunchtime. I think the idea is that if there was a sign that alcohol had any influence on your work, you would be fired on the spot. Drinking at lunchtime is interesting. I often found when I have more than 1 pint in my lunchbreak at my old workplace, Id get a little bit drunk and giddy. Im by no means a lightweight, i think its because of its early in the day etc etc. But one pint/glass of wine is no problem. That wont have much affect on you.
I would also assume that a strict definition of under the influence could perhaps equate to driving terms, ie 2 pints or 2 glasses of wine is the max you can have, but as I say I have 2 pints at my lunch and I know im not working at 100%.

Re: Civil Service
im fairly sure its not two pints = under legal limit. esp if you have two and then immediately drive.
i know for a fact that a bottle of bud (for example) is 1.5 units and therefore your technically ****ed if you have 2 of the buggers and then drive immediately.
(your body removes 1 unit of alcohol per hour tho)
and its two small glasses of wine not like the normal jugs of wine you get at most places.

Damn the move to more efficient local services which has ended all that.

Company Policy on Alcohol and Drugs
This policy will apply in all company workplaces and customer premises where our employees are carrying out
work.
The policy is intended to meet the Company’s obligations under the UK’s Transport and Works Act 1992 and
other legislation relevant to alcohol and drug abuse (Misuse of Drugs Act 1971) as well as discharging a general
duty of care to our employees, customers and the public.
Individuals who enter the workplace, having consumed alcohol or illegal substances (drugs), can have a
devastating effect not only on their own safety but on that of their colleagues and third parties as well. Some
prescription drugs may have an adverse effect on performance and each individual has a duty to understand the
effects of any drugs which they are taking.
The Company has adopted a Policy of zero tolerance to the possession or consumption of illegal substances, such
as non-prescribed drugs.
In accordance with this policy all employees, (including any agency staff or sub-contractors) must not:-
Report for duty or enter the workplace having taken illegal substances (drugs) or having recently consumed
alcohol.
Report for duty or enter any workplace while under the influence of alcohol.
Bring alcohol or illegal substances into the workplace.
Attend work whilst taking prescribed drugs without having first checked with the Doctor/Pharmacist the
risk of the drugs affecting their fitness for work and having informed their supervisor.
The Company is committed to keeping its workplaces free from the dangers arising from consumption of alcohol
or illegal substances (drugs). It will therefore:
Apply disciplinary procedure to employees who break these rules.
Refuse workplace entry to employees, suppliers and sub-contractors who have, or who are suspected of
having, recently consumed alcohol or taken illegal substances (drugs).
Progressively develop procedures for screening, for drug and alcohol abuse where required under relevant
legislation, where an individual has been involved in a workplace incident or where there are reasonable
grounds for suspicion of impairment.
In addition:
Persons taking prescription drugs which present any risk to themselves and/or others will be transferred to
non-safety critical tasks whilst in receipt of treatment.
Persons who are found after screening to be working, having consumed illegal substances or with blood
alcohol content above the legal limit for driving will be liable to summary dismissal for gross misconduct.
Persons who are discovered to be in possession of, or trading in, illegal substances will be reported to the
Police.
The company is not seeking to punish employees who admit to having a drink or drug related problem, and who
approach the Company for help and who are prepared to undergo an agreed form of treatment. However,
approaches of this nature will not be accepted when they have been made subsequent to, or just prior to, a
Company check that either has or would have revealed that that person had recently consumed alcohol or illegal
substances.

Re: Civil Service
You shouldn't drink at all if you're going to drive.
I SHOULD KNOW
Take it from me, losing your licence is a real bummer and gives you a criminal record
On topic Rankin, I'd say 1 pint is ok. Unless you're rolling around though, I doubt they'd actually take a urine/blood sample off you to test how pissed you are.

Re: Civil Service
I recently decided on a new dieting system: the plan is to phase out a meal every once and a while and instead have a pint or two (so that you still get the neutriunts its best if its ale or guinness), and eventually I'll never have to eat again. Not sure on its effectiveness as a diet, but its been enjoyable so far (breakfast is gone now ).

Re: Civil Service
When I was 19 I worked in the DWP for a year, and the site I was employed on had (and still does) a Social club on site, which we used to frequent. Monday to Thursday was spent doing long hours so that on Friday we could we get in at about 8am, have two and a half hours for dinner and drinking in the Social, and finish at about half three to go home and get changed and go out.
Happy care free days.
Anyway, quite regularly we used to be 'drunk on the job' in that technically we'd be over the limit to drive, but weren't 'pissed'. Our line manager didn't give a **** anway, and quite often used to join us
