Preperations
Well with less than 3 mounths untill i fly out to assuie for 12 mounths, i need to start thinking about the important things.....
my computer.....
does anyone know how much damage being put through and X-Ray machine can/could do to my pc (EG:Hard drives etc), bearing in mind it will not be in its case at the time rather in protective packaging such as foam and static bags.

Re: Preperations
Take the hard drives out and take them in hand luggage. They're the most delicate things.

Re: Preperations
Might be a bit... big. And the problem wasn't the x-rays. The problem was the jolting around that will be going on - hard drives aren't very good with physical shock.

Re: Preperations
I take my laptop when flying abroad, theres no problems with the x-ray machine, but as MrL_Jakiri said its not the x-ray machine you want to worry about its the idea of the computer being lobbed by some twat in heathrow onto a quantas plane, this can and would do considerable damge, as MrL_Jakari said remove the HD and carry them seperatly, as well as that could you honestly fit a whole computer as handluggage?

My Shuttle's fit as hand luggage before \o/
Rag the drives out, stick 'em in a soft bag, carry on as hand yadda yadda.

Re: Preperations
Has anyone here ever taken a plane before?
It's simple. Package it in a cardboard box or similar, shove some foam in and make sure it's well cushioned. Then when you get to the check-in desk, explain that it is delicate and you want it handled carefully.
The idea of the baggage handlers throwing stuff around and kicking it on the floor is a big myth.
If you really really are worried about your hard-drives, you can take it in hand luggage. The X-Rays won't do any damage. They may want to inspect them individually though. I've taken my laptop through the departure lounge via hand luggage about 20 times, and it works fine.

It's really not at a lot of airports.
You only have to look out of a window (be it plane or terminal) to see them throwing the cases around in a pretty vigorous way.

Re: Preperations
oh and yes i agree with stew here
ive watched from the plane as to how they unload etc and its not a simple case of 'carefully putting' the bags away.
its more a case of chucking it to whoever is inside the plane who thenchucks it further along etc etc. if it drops and slams onto the ground...who cares.
you cant prove it was them.

Re: Preperations
Joining the 'hating baggage handlers' bandwagon.
On my recent trip to portugal we watched from the plane as the pleasant Thompson employees threw everyones bodyboards and surfboards onto the conveyor with a 'lets see if they bounce' sort of attitude.
Considering we all have to pay £30 to take the things on the plane anyway you'd expect them to treat them a bit more respectfully, but alas.
Just complain alot if anything goes wrong, usually doesn't work but after witnessing this i managed to get my £30 back.
Or get your stuff insured.

buy those for your hdd and take them over in hand luggage if your really worried. insure everything else so if it does go bust you can claim on the mobo etc but all your data is still a-ok

Re: Preperations
Well i will back up all important stuff to my other hd and take them both in hand luggage, if i cant fit the rest of the pc bits in my hand luggage i will put them in a hard container and pad them out with foam, tbh a mobo, 2 ram sticks, a gfx card and some fans wont take up to TOO much space, power supply and case can be brought in oz for not much cost (money will be a big issue for me, hence me taking as much with me as i can).
i know! i could use cloths as padding as long as the parts are in a static proof bag! (and some hard container as i mentioned to stop suff bending in ways it should not), also, i wont be taking suitcases, everything will be in duffle bags as they weigh less and i can only take up to 3 stone (44lbs).

Re: Preperations
tbh if your going to dismantle the whole thing then what i suggest you do is this
pack your case full of clothes
then lift about half of them up
and begin placing various components around making sure they cant 'hit eachother'
then close case
profit from my wisdom <3 <3

I think that's pretty universal, I've watched them throw luggage around many times while looking out the plane window.
More than that, you can't even trust the buggers not to go through your luggage either.

Re: Preperations
For something bulky and somewhat fragile (like a computer) you might consider shipping it separately (like with FedEx or equiv.).
Airport baggage handlers are just evil.

I'm pretty sure I catch the plane more than anyone here, and nothing of mine has ever broken or been damaged by baggage handlers.
Also, Phalon, you realise the baggage handlers are employed by the airport - not the airlines, right? So they weren't Thompson employees :/

did ur e-penis just grow?
on a serious note i didnt have any problems puttin all my parts in my suitcase wrapped in static proof bags and places between my clothes when i came back from hong kong, but i did carry most of the delicate stuff in hand luggage and nothing happened when they passed through the x-ray, also was a good job they didnt take notice what was in it either, means i didnt have to declare it and pay a big sum of cash;D

no but out of the hundreds of users on this forum i doubt your going to be 'numero uno' for racking up air miles.
lots of people fly because of work.
and why in the hell do you get the plane to uni?

It's a holiday on Liberation day in Jersey every year, I used to love it.
In answer to JJ, I didn't say I'd racked up the most air-miles. I probably haven't. I'm pretty positive I've caught the plane more than most people though.
It wasn't some kind of lame boast - I was just adding weight to my argument

Well, i concede the point. I was too busy being pissed off with the fact that all the air hostesses on my flight were built like a brick shithouse.
What's wrong with airlines nowadays?
I thought the point was that air hostesses were supposed to be fit so that while they're waving their arms around, pointing to the fire exits, showing you what to pull in case of an 'emergency' etc, you can imagine them naked.
And not have to reach for the vomit bag while you're doing it.

Yeah, I dunno either. I guess all the big super cool airlines get the fit air-hostesses.
The ones I've seen are mostly either ugly or old

Dude I was serious. Germany just surrendered the islands back to the UK, they were never liberated. This might be a slightly pedantic difference but you know....anything for an extra post!

It does happen, and just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't disprove this. It will really depend on what you're carrying and how well it's packed. HDD especially are sensitive to shock & vibration, and it doesn't take much. I had mine fail only a day ago, and that was only after transporting it to a friends house and back.
Infact the airlines usually state that you should not pack valuables or easily damaged items in check-in luggage for this reason, they take no liability for what they carry onboard.
..also, you've not truely experienced flying till you've been in a sardine sized cessna for 6 hours travelling out into the middle of no-where, literally.

Maybe Germany had surrendered, but I'm pretty sure martial law still existed in Jersey until it was "freed". I'm not saying there was a big fight, the Germans left when told to, but it wasn't immediately after the surrender.

Re: Preperations

I am probably wrong in the technical sense of the word, in that we weren't officially liberated.
I've always celebrated "Liberation Day" though - there's even a square and a statue celebrating it. So I felt pretty justified arguing my side.
