Free planets no longer competitive?
Free accounts are limited to:
"Warpgate" (-2 ETA)
"Improved Power Grid" (50 constructions)
No limits on Ship-production
"Technology Analysis" (Planet, Surface and Technology Scan)
No limits on Core Extraction branch
"Portable Earthquake Generators" (Exploding Fist)
Heavy Cargo Transfers III (You can successfully mine only a maximum of 300 asteroids)
Free accounts cannot join or create a buddy pack
Free accounts do not see outgoing fleets on the gal status screen and also have an ad-banner on the top of each page.
---
So basically, without the help of an alliance you'll never be able to attack anyone (due to no unit /news scans). You wont really be able to help your alliance with def (due to no Stargate), and you wont be able to play as a value planet.
All you'll really be able to do is initiate 300 roids, build a few ships and reset your account 'just for fun'.
Guess this round is more of a try before you die round :\
Id welcome any thoughts on people who would have liked to play 'competitively' without paying and wether they are just going to give up or give it a go....

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
Where is this? The free accounts are nothing like that anymore. The only thing that a free account can't do is population/government.

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
Its on the "Free accounts and Payment" page at the bottom. I guess it never got updated with the improved abilities of free accounts.

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
I suspect it just hasn't been changed. Nevertheless, hopefully PA Team will look at this thread soon and fix it.

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
branch 1, level 3
branch 2, level 3
branch 3. level 3
branch 4, level 5
branch 5, level 3
branch 6, level 3
branch 7, level 9
You can cross reference these with the tech tree, they are in order as they appear on the research page ingame and the tech tree page in the manual. They cannot join bps and the outgoing gal status viewing is decided by their "status" in the galaxy, trusted etc.
Apologies, that faulty information was up and yes free accounts are still competitive this round!

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
Just to clarify JBG's post, this is what he means:
Free planets can research:
branch 1, level 3
ie, the Traveltime Branch up to level 3, which iirc is the Stargate (all ETA research is available).
branch 2, level 3
Infrastructure, up to level 3, which iirc is 100 Constructions (of a maximum 150).
branch 3. level 3
Production, up to level 3, which is Siege Weapons (all Ships are available).
branch 4, level 5
Scan Branch, up to level 5, which includes PSTUNF (ie, up to Fleet inclusive, not Military or Jumpgate scans).
branch 5, level 3
Core Resources, up to level 3, which is Magma Extraction iirc (all mines are available).
branch 6, level 3
Covert Ops, up to Warp Core Sabotage (anti Ship).
branch 7, level 9
Asteroid Mining, up to level 9, which permits mining of 2500 roids.

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
I would say free planets are very playable, but won't be able to compete for top 50 imo.
Not when paid planets get their ships for 75% of the cost that an unpaid planet gets.

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
Just as a response to this, the Round 20 Changes were lost when we changed the game over to Round 21. As such certain information which I believed to be there appears not to be. It will be fixed.

Re: Free planets no longer competitive?
I started relatively late, so "never knew about" might be more fitting
