Sometimes companies just settle cases just for the sake of not having to spend time on such trivial things

I know my dad's company has done that quite a few times
even tho they were in a better legal position

There's two sides to the coin. Companies, if pushed, will settle 9 times out of 10 simply due to the ease and lack of negative publicity. The other issue is that they will just break the law as a money making strategy.
