To paraphrase an old song:
'Any defense is good defense,
So I took what I could get'

paraphrasing means saying the same thing just in other words - not taking a phrase and changing its meaning
now we just need someone to tell us the latin name for what u did

I feel like i should know the answer to this one, but will no doubt get it wrong as usual.
The best defence ships will kill (or freeze) the ships that need to be dealt with - pods in whatever form - preferably without dying themselves. OH... and they need to get there on time too.
Now tell us why we're wrong

hmmm
/me thinks that if breeze was given a test containing the question 'what is 3 x 3?' he would answer ' that is 3 times the number 3'
wtf is this kinda answer.

One that states the obvious, as u so neatly point out... since there isnt' a simple answer or a single ship that IS the best defence. And if i was given a test containing the question 'what is 3 x 3?' i would wonder wtf i was doing back in primary school.
If i seriously had to nominate a single ship, I'd make it the sentinel, only eta6 ship that targets all.

It has to be the pulsar rather than sentinel as when the sent goes t3 all it losses its power to kill and pulsars rock at killing fr/de
Sentinel is more of a cr/co killer but if some1 sends mass fi the t3 will be distributed and not focussed so it looses its effectiveness

Well the whole point of the sentinel was that you could send it to defend vs anything, and it would at least fire and kill something. I've found them reasonably effective in large enough numbers.
On the other hand, send pulsars in against xand fi/co and tell me how much they rock. Personally i treat my pulsars as if they are made of glass.
Different ships will do better in different circumstances of course, but as thread starter says the point is to be there - hence eta6 ships are best for defence.

The best defence is to play with there mind, the bigger you are and the more def fleets you can get incomming (xan mates who send 1 ship are good for this) the more likley they are to pull and the less likley they are to want to attack you again.
Also a good plan is to send a well backed up pre-retal at there entire galaxy, cos that usually works, and when they pulll land the attack anyway. }=)

However big you are presumably they wouldn't be attacking if they didn't think they could get through, so size isn't usually an issue. Fake defence can be useful, and a few extra single-ship fleets can make landing look a scarier prospect, but its something of a two edged sword. I know a few people who lost fleets this round sending genuine defence where the rest is fake - when the attacker calls the bluff it can be painful. Personally I never just look at the number of fleets defending but always do mil scans to see how robust the defence seems.
I think someone already said the best defence is offence. Strictly speaking I guess we're talking defence strategy here rather than best defence ships, but turning the tables and sending retals will often work well. A well organised galaxy with good alliances will usually get the counter covered though - and then arrange some incoming for your defence

The best defence is knowledge!
If you know what the attacker has then you can defend it by calling out to your aliance. They will then send the right ships.
e.g
If the attacker send fighters and pods you will need loadsa fighter and pod targeting ships.
Without the art of knowledge of what the attacker has then you are gonna get destroyed. (In most cases)

Yes and no. There are a lot of bad DCs who don't make effective or even sensible use of ships. My question was what is the most important attribute in a defence ship in an agregate way where you dunno what will be attacking and they trait I think is most important is speed above anything else.

naa, the best defence is the rollback-type ship, very useful.
but as always, the best defence is a good offense
