Graphics problems
Right.....

i have transferred my old Geforce 4 Mx420 card into an old athlon 1000mhz computer.

its slot IS agp 4x compatible...


however i have the following problems :



upon booting windows at about the time MSN Messenger is loading up the monitor powers down. Pc is fine but nothing is coming out of the card.


when playing rome total war...everything is fine until you try and start a battle....then the screen spliuts into two or 3 or 4 with various 'ghost' images all over the shop

the colours go green and horrible.
the display goes crazy.
my eyes bleed and it takes awhile to be able to hit 'quit game' then when i go back the loading screens only show the progress bar. not the graphic.



ive run the dxdiag stuff and it all reports ok. i have the latest drivers. i have the latest everything.



is it simple a case of not enough power like i have a suspicion it is? im not sure what the power wattage is on the psu but would it cause such tempromental behaviour?

oh...the 'black out' problem is intermittent when booting (im writing this from the pc in question os obviously it does work sometimes)


altho when i hit post the screen went black for a split second then came back on....

Does the card have a fan on teh processor ? If so check it's working ok and not covered in dust and shite. If its just a plain heat sink, try touching it (or putting a finger as close as is comfortable) to see if there is a lot of heat generated. If so consider fitting a fan.

It could be an intermittant PSU problem but i'd suspect the card first

There's not much you can do dude - why? Because you're victim to this problem - I've outlined some tips below but with the problem in the article it's unlikely you'll get to eradicate the problem.


Try rolling back drivers - as Boris recently found out on GD by me, the latest drivers aren't always the optimal one's for your card - try using detonator 4x (ie: 45 etc.) drivers and test each one. Try downloading these drivers.If that fails then try detonator drivers - v. 29.42 - they are guaranteed to work

If you get the black screens it could be that your mobo drivers probably needs to be updated.

Vaio: Those still daft enough to use Win98 may be stuck with it.
However, I see that article is from 2002. One thinks they may have patched it by now, 2 and a half years on.
