Re: Irc and Alliances
Having checked through the various alliances on the AR forum, all of the alliances listed use IRC. Most of the alliances that train new players teach them how to use IRC, but I doubt that any would be particularly keen on players who refuse to use IRC at any time (not being able to access it at work would be fine).

Re: Irc and Alliances
All (or not) use IRC if they're serious about it. I think the better question would be "How many alliances do still use own IRC servers?".

Ziw: Chaos still runs it? I think NoS quit using private IRC server in r11(iirc?) because it went nuts all the time.

Ah, i remember that. I even found old logs of it.
I think that all the gaylove Xy and Nadar expressed to each others during that round was the reason why the servers went haywire

Re: Irc and Alliances
A private server is more secure then a few rooms at the NG server

Re: Irc and Alliances
Far easier to take down for the night as well. There's advantages and disadvantages you do have more security and versitility with what you can do with channels and names but you can also leave your server open to be taken down by nasty people.
When I was in 1up they were using PA Net and at that stage of the game (ie. dire PAX) there wasn't as much need for their own server as there would have been in the days of huge alliance wars.

True. I remember r8 (or was it r9?), our IRC were heavily DoSsed to hell and back, and to and back one more time. Happened a handful of times. Was a rather unfun experience.
You don't need anything else than Netgamers anyway (imo).

Did you consider using a bot on netgamers with a partyline? (dynamic nicknames and IPs for the bot obviously)
