Re: Java

eh ?

one assumes you mean a java compiler.

i've never found it to be particularly difficult to set up (indeed the recent jdk's from sun seem to sort that for you anyway)

theres are a load of free ones (google java compiler etc), but i just use sun's myself.

Re: Java

Visual café was one we had at school.
I believe Borlands Java compiler is free.
It's been a long time since I set up a java environment, but I remember they were all shit.

Re: Java

How can you understand Java and not understand the written instructions on how to set it up?

Re: Java

At uni they 'advise' that we use BlueJ, but I've taken to the rather bad habit of using VS.NET and dumping everything into a J# file and 'fixing' it before and after. Noone's noticed yet.

Re: Java

From what I hear, BlueJ is nice for not learning anything.

Re: Java

BlueJ is probably the worst Java IDE anyone could use, for learning or otherwise.

Then my smart arse Uni recommends us to use Together 6, probably the most resource hogging POS ever to stalk the surface of Earth and supposedly the licence is a 5 figure sum, yes a great way to spend money.

Linux Gedit/Notepad or some other text based program w/ compiler that has colour highlighting is most recommended.

Re: Java

Textpad has shortcuts to compile and run things, and does syntax highlighting, it's what I used before this BlueJ-cum-VS.NET fiasco.
