Re: Ceasefire , Shmeasefire , Time to go back to business as usual
I hear there was once a war and it was fought by Europeans and "they" believed they were better than the people they were fighting due to virtue of where they were born and this only happened within the last century but now there's peace in Europe so this must be wrong and I have to have been mistaken because if they were killing each other so much back then and frankly I also heard that far more people fought and died in this war than over in Palestine but this just seems utterly ridiculous to me and it must be wrong surely I'm wrong please help me GD!

ITT , Jonny B Good explains how to avoid the usage of Paragraphs. And how to make a series of random sentences into something which may be construed as a deep and meaningful statement rather than total gibberish.
History Teaches us that Wars are primarily caused by greed or religion, and that the winners of wars in the past were tactical geniuses, whereas the wars of today are won by those with the biggest armory and the willingness to use it.

Jonnys "Point" seems to be based on the fact that he feels in previous wars in Europe, the reason for fighting wasnt religious, but Ideological (feel free to correct me here JBG , your post really could refer to any one of a number of wars which raged within Europe between 1900 and 2000, almost all of which have claimed more casualties than the hostilities in Israel).
Alas, hes not actually specified WHY he feels this is the case, just muddied the water a bit by saying how this war was bigger and more important (which if hes referring to WW1 and WW2, im not even going to attempt to debate) and then hes just wandered into gibberish which i cant make head nor tail of.
It IS Friday though, and i think hes been on the Guinness, so we can let him off.

You're seriously overestimating the importance of superior generalship in terms of winning wars. As Barcas said to Hannibal "you know how to gain a victory but not how to use it". The side with the greater political and social determination and pragmatism is always victorious, and if both sides are extremely close in terms of this it comes down to troop quality which is dependent on generalship and then finally tactical ability on the battlefield. Large wars are almost always caused by "greed" (this is a pretty imprecise word so what I'm actually saying is 'the wish to aggrandise either oneself or a group of which one feels oneself to be part of', which is a fairly broad definition but let's be honest massive generalisations don't usually help anyone).
There's no real reason to suppose the inhabitants of Israel and Palestine are physically incapable of living alongside one another. My reference to World War One (a nationalistically driven war with huge casualties, the use of chemical weapons, massive propaganda and originally the completely idiotic view by each side of the other as virtually subhuman) was due to the fact that the symptoms you described as indicative of this supposed inability are no different to those I've just listed above. You cannot negotiate with a fundamentalist but you can negotiate him out of his fundamentalism.
PS In reference to your second post religious considerations are ideological considerations much as a dog is a mammal, so a big "what?" on that one.

Very interesting thread, I must say in terms of my latest essay, "Is war inevitable between sovereign states?" Most of you so far seem to be arguing along the right lines, having not done the reading I have!

Re: Ceasefire , Shmeasefire , Time to go back to business as usual
They are negotiating with the palestine authority, whereas you cannot hold them responsible for every individual action taking by, in this case the Islamic Jihad.
What I mean with that is, although the goverment is responsible, this shouldn't be a reason to stop talking and stall the peace process any more.
However, what I would expect and can understand is that Israel assasinates some key people within the Islamic Jihad.
