[Opera] Ladies and Gentlemen...
Opera is now free.
No more ad banners, and no purchase required. In other words, there is no longer any excuse not to. Note that this applies to the desktop version, not to Opera Mobile

I dont think there is a way to block ads (apart from the simple pop up blocker - f12)
my only wish now is that they cleaned up the initial startup when you first get opera. It's not very good - and it looks intimidating to many users ive tried to introduce it to.

Re: [Opera] Ladies and Gentlemen...
No, they've done this because Firefox is used by more users. How else can Opera compete with "free" and "ad-less" browser? The only thing it lacks now is a decent ad-blocking system like Ad-Block in Firefox which can even select swf files and other files to block (with nuke any object with undo last nuke etc. options, amongst the other bits I like)

Wow. that's got to slightly irritate those people who won a free version of Opera about 2 weeks ago.

Erm....why?
Keep in mind that to "win" all you needed to do was click on a couple of links. Unless you meant a different incident.

Re: [Opera] Ladies and Gentlemen...
I use firefox so I was just going from the thread title. I assumed it took a little more than that.

Re: [Opera] Ladies and Gentlemen...
How are they going to make their money now? Is the mobile version their only source of income? If they'd make their GUI a bit less like hard work it'd use it.

There was no winning involved, you could simply get a free registration code on a certain day if you requested one.

Opera do not pay me any money to have me tell a forum where I know a fair amount of users use Opera that they can now have the browser with no ad banner if they had not purchased it yet.

From what I heard, Opera made relatively little income off of the desktop version of Opera anyway, most of their money comes from the mobile market and from sponsor deals with the search engines available from Opera's default interface, stuff like that.
Personally I find the UI not to be any hard work at all, in fact it's way easier to customize than any other browser I know of. At least, no other browser I know of allows you to drag and drop individual items between bars, remove, add and reorder stuff on the fly, et cetera. Although I will grant that it seems a bit intimidating to people who are not used to it at first.

Re: [Opera] Ladies and Gentlemen...
It's all down to personal preference and what you find important in a browser.
Firefox requires less configuring from the get-go, and probably handles some pages better than Opera because it tends to be taken into consideration more by web designers. Aditionally, it offers many extensions that can add all sorts of functionality to the browser.
Opera generally comes out faster in speed tests, has an interface that is way more customizeable and a lot of features to speed up and make browsing easier built-in, while still being a smaller package than Firefox. It also offers a built-in email and chat client for those that want to have such things in a single package.

SilverSmoke wins this thread! xbox ftw
and i guess firefox forces opera to go for free.
no sane person would pay for a browser if there is a better one for free :P

Happened to stumble across this, seems relatively similar to Firefox's, although I am not sure about whether it works on any object.
