Like MrL_Jakyll said. It has nice graphics and a good interface and the main mission isn't all too bad. The submissions between chapters are awfully repetitive though and the trade system is just plainly crap.

Leech it or borrow it but don't spend money on it.

Currently playing Freelancer as well.

It's quite good to play through - just don't expect realistic flight models, an extensive trading system, or complete non-linearity. Having said that, the storyline is fairly good to play through, currently trying not to die on the last mission.

what mark said - although there are quite a few mods out there (try lancersreactor) which can add to replay value.

if the goons at digital anvil had spent that ludicrous development time and budget on more content rather than the (admittedly staggeringly nice) game engine, or included a better combat model, it would be great.

i've been hoping an addon will do that, but i've not heard of one

Granted, the game engine is rather ace.

Blowing through a minefield or cruising an asteroid belt with the scenery on-screen is very enjoyable.

I was worried it was going to be one of these headache inducing thinking type games (like elite) fortunately it wasn't and is the best space/flight combat sim to date.

(Though replay value after completing main campaign I admit is limited)

Anyway, the combat, feel, storyline in a game for example like Wingcommander was much more entertaining in my opinion.

Wingcommander series was overproduced trash. More money went into making it look pretty than on developing any sort of decent gameplay.

It's control system is also the most awkward ever invented only being marginally better than X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.

Freelancer's economic system was perfect, all you need to worry about is that some item costs x amount at one place and can be sold for y amount at another. Anything more than that is just adding unessesary complications to what should otherwise be a simple concept.

Wingcommander wasn't perfect, far from that but at least it had some atmosphere in it, something seriously lacking in Freelancer with it's crap cinematics.

Freelancer was hyped as the new Elite (I don't know who started that shit, the media or the developers itself), it's certainly not, it's just another space shooter in which going 'free' doesn't have any purposes at all.
