Y-A-T. (yet another thread heh...) - I didn't bother with the expensive 3 computer set I said in GD a while ago :/

[1] I'm looking for mobo WITHOUT ON-BOARD SOUND, GFX, LAN - with USB2.0 support & x8 AGP support needed really - and it has to be Socket A as I'll be inserting a XP 2400 chip in it (I have an Ethernet card so no on-board LAN as I said)

[2] so...which of the following sound cards?

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Player Retail, Audigy Platinum eX Retail, Audigy Platinum-2 Retail, Audigy Player SB1394 OEM, Extigy Retail ?

[3] Cool case accessories - so a watercooling system, cathode lights (blue &/or red liked) and any 'cool' cases that would suit socket a mobo

If you want REAL quality (not just relative quality) go for the Yamaha SW1000XG at a tad under £450

You'll be hard pushed to find a decent motherboard that doesn't have onboard sound - for some reason the industry have it in thier heads that onboard sound is what everyone wants. Just disable it when you get it (normally by moving a jumper on the board or changing a BIOS setting).
As for the soundcard, whichever one of those you listed is cheapest. You wont notice a difference in quality, it's just a question of the more expensive ones having gold plated this and digital inputs for the other...

maybe you shouldve highlighted need too. I have onboard sound and its even better than the soundcard I had, as for more network ports maybe you could use an extra 1 in the future? even if you dont want them you just disable them and can use them as backups

I thought onboard Sound & LAN meant you couldn't use a soundcard and disable the onboard sound and that you couldn't disable the on-board LAN and use an Ethernet card instead. I have a cheap £10 one but if on-board LAN is better I'll keep it

You can (as far as I know) disable onboard sound/gfx/lan on any motherboard these days.

Unless I'm very mistaken, inserting a soundcard into your mobo disables the onboard sound by default. Same for videocards and onboard video.

Not sure about LAN though.

well in my experience nothing gets disabled by default, usually it simply consists of going into bios and disabling it there or at the very least disabling it in the control panel

Doesn't on my A7V333 - I can run both at once, though why I'd want to is another thing. Perhaps thats just the legendary Asus reputation for customisation though.

It's perfectly possible to run 2 LAN, 2 sound or 2 video devices at the same time. Of course you'd need a specialist reason for doing so, but nevertheless it's possible.

Hm, I was under the impression that inserting any sound/video card would override the onboard one, and the computer would use those ones rather than the onboard ones by default.

Not if you don want it to.

Most motherboards with onboard features allow you to enable/disable them in-BIOS. My old mobo with onboard VGA would disable it automatically if another graphics card was plugged in, but you could still enable it manually and use it with dual-monitor, etc.
The same is possible with using 2 network cards and modems, although as far as sound cards go you'd need a fairly obscure reason to have 2 installed and active at once.
