MT I need your help matey.
Right, I am not good with terminology so I will try my best here.
I have an ASUS A7V333, Athlon 2100 XP thingie and an Athlon 1700 processor, 512 mb ram and thats about it for all you need I think.
Now I built this PC because the old compaq presario you saw at my house was crap for recording purposes and I was feeling saucy.
However this one is doing my head in.
When I check my input signal it is as clear as a bell, little noise or hum is picked up and all is lovely. However when I check my input signal in software such as Cubase SX it now develops a high pitched whining noise whether I am recording or monitoring. And this is where it bloody matters.
Now my question is, and bear in mind I know nothing about these things, would buying a proper sound card fix this for me or is it something that is going to always be there?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

What you're describing sounds like feedback, just like you can get with any recording/amplification equipment (hello guitar amps etc).
If you have a microphone plugged in unplug it. If you're wanting to record FROM the mic, then move it as far away from the speakers as possible.
I have the exact same motherboard as you (A7V333) and have had no problems when recording using either the onboard sound or my SBLive.

Yeah, screeching normally occurs when the microphone is too close to the speakers.

thank you for your naive patronisation.
as i have just successfully recorded a full album and i have aqquired some performing experience due to playing guitar for about 10 years, i know what feedback is.
however when i said that my input signal is as clear as a bell i thought it might have saved me typing this reply because it IS NOT FEEDBACK.
as i thought i said, it is only when recording software is having a peek at the onboard sound inputs of the ASUS that the problem occurs so my question is IF YOU HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE OF THIS SAME ISSUE PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF BUYING A SOUNDCARD HELPED IT OR IF IT IS A FAULT IN MY PC!

thank you for failing to provide the information that would have saved you having to type that in the first place.
as i thought i said, i own the exact same motherboard as you and have had no issues with the onboard sound - and yes i have recorded with both the mic and the line in.
perhaps you would care to elaborate on what you mean by 'onboard sound inputs', although I'm assuming you mean the inputs on the rear of the board.
it is worth considering that when the recording software is looking at the volume levels of the sound inputs it is looking at the RECORDING volume and not the PLAYBACK volume, which can be independantly set [edit] and independantly muted [/edit] for every input source the sound chipset provides. However as you are clearly a professional you'll no doubt have checked this.
it is also noteworthy that getting annoyed and sarcastic when you don't immediately get the answer you want due to giving poor information is not likely to boost your chances of resolving the issue; it is more likely to end up with your post being closed by an irate mod who doesn't like trying to help ingrates.

Im afraid I must apologise on behalf of my inept forum collegues who apparently can't read English :/
Do all music programs create this whining noise? Or just the one you mentioned?
It might be possible that the one you mentioned is processing and playing the 'record settings' of Windows, in which case it could just be feedback, or it could be the application just isnt suited to your onboard sound?
If it's a more general thing, possibly the onboard sound is broken, check the latest drivers etc.

I shall protect my intellectual property by whatever means necessary, as Idi is clearly depriving me of my livelyhood!
Anyways, I'm only a linux user through necessity not through choice. I still think of windows as a place where it's much easier to "get things done" and linux as a more specialist environment, which is probably why I use KDE (it being the most windowsy of the two).
