Everyone entering the house was required to wear protective clothing, due to the house being extremely filthy. The woman was even too large to get up and get to the bathroom. To remove the stench, a constant flow of fresh air had to be blown into the building.

Rescue workers had to remove several glass pane doors and lift the lady with the couch and all onto the back of a pickup truck. Because she had not left the couch in years, her skin had become attached to the furniture. In the local hospital, doctors tried to cut her loose, but to no avail. The woman died still attached to the couch.

From the first autopsy, the cause of death was determined to be 'lethal gluttony', although investigations surrounding the situation in the house continue. Grinds was living with a man, who may be guilty of gross negligence. According to Herman Thomas, the housemate, he did try to lift Grinds, but was simply unable to.

The neighbours did not know the woman was living in the house.

I don't think they had that in mind when they came up with the idea to save her.

Yeah, but, if you were living with somebody who hadnt moved from the couch for the past 6 years, would you not think about getting her help?

Actually, I'd think about shooting the bitch. But a few years before that I'd think about getting her help.

If they were someone I cared for, I doubt I'd let them get to that stage. It depends.

If they were some schmuck I happened to be sharing with then let them die. Presumably it wasn't an overnight thing and so they chose (to an extent) to be like this. Who am I to get in their way?

we don't know if she refused to let her food-supplier get medical help, or if he withheld it for some reason.

She was unlikely to be simply lazy and greedy though; there had to be mental illness present, so the "she deserved it / explode her" comments are a little crass. Let's all laugh at the easy target = clever?

I don't find this sort of thing funny in the slightest, but at the same time I don't view it as a tragedy either*.

If I take too many drugs and kill myself I sure hope that no-one will feel sympathetic, it was a choice of sorts. I'm not sure I buy into the division of "the mentally ill" and "the sane" in such stark terms.

* = Well, I do - but just not her actual death. The fact she got like ths in the first place is a tragedy of sorts (more a symptom of social problems, etc).

that isn't hypothetically relevant. It isn't inevitable that you get raped from wearing make-up/being pretty, nore is it right. It is inevitable that you will get fat if you eat too much and to an extent it's right, fitting with laws of science etc.. I think it's sad that anyone could be let to get that way, or that they let themself get that way. Surely if she couldn't move then the guy she was living with could control the amount she ate.. It's simply irresponsible to let anyone you care about get that way. If, as is likely, she had a mental problem then she would almost definately have needed help from someone else :/

I wouldn't say she deserved death. She seems to have chosen it, certainly.

In what your saying, if you knew the risks of vodka or heroin as you do and died of an overdose, id feel sorry for your family and friends, and you, but to a lesser extent because you made a bad choice when you knew the possibilities in the first place and over indulged for self gratification.

To preempt your obvious next post, i am well aware she over indulged.

But for self gratification? Anyone with a weight problem will tell you how hard it is to slim. Over indulging in food, presuming she was always fat, would have been a natural. Without proper help which she was obviously not provided, it would be only natural and normal to eat as much as she wanted. Which is slightly different from doing heroin because it gives you a kick.

While addiction to heroin may also come under the "natural and normal to make the pain of withdrawal go away" and also wouldnt be 'cured' without proper help being provided, this is all down to the first or second "bad decision" - a decision maybe the fat woman didnt get to make.
