Alaaf, Alaaf
So it's carnaval here again and on TV is nothing but silly music, dressed up people are walking in the streets and beer is coming out of the water tap for the coming three/four days. And all this to introduce the fasting period that will last up to eastern (not like anyone will actually fast, but that's what the custom is about).
I'm curious if you lot have something like this too in your country. I know of Germany and the south of the Netherlands who have this custom.

Re: Alaaf, Alaaf
We just have pancake day, to use up all the ingredients before Lent when we 'fast'. Like you say, this obviously doesn't happen, but that is where the tradition comes from.
You Europeans are both wierd and crazy at times, although it does look fun if you get into it.

Yes, and is followed by Ash Wednesday.
I hadn't realised it was pancake day this Tuesday, thanks SI.

Damn :/
If I was home I could bug my mother to make them, I really can't be arsed to go through the hassle of making them myself though.

They're not that difficult to make are they?
Just googled and found the ingredients:
150g plain flour
2 large eggs
300ml milk
2 tbsp melted butter or vegetable oil, plus extra for frying
pinch of salt
It doesn't really seem that much effort and the rewards are definately there!

No, I just hate cooking. My food gets thrown in the oven and left there till ready, or I remember it is there.

Re: Alaaf, Alaaf
**** me for moving right to the citycenter. One thing I hadn't thought of before moving here is the yearly horror that is carnaval. It's one of those events where you see more idiocy and uglyness than you could possibly begin to imagine. Ofcourse one doesn't neccesarily have to participate ( I won't) but I can't escape the noise of the big partytent that has been erected next to the townhall that goes on 24 hours a day. Luckily I'll be going to a lanparty in Aalsmeer shortly and I hope to find a safe haven there.

That is ugly but still it can't match the tragedy that is (amongst other places) going on outside my window.
