Mobile Phone Stuff [UK Only]
My contract ends soon with o2, but I still have the phone and am content with it. So I'm looking at Pay-as-you-go at the moment, but not sure which company to go with.

I could get a contract, but it'd need to be a decent deal - I'm hoping for about 200-400 free minutes any time, for under £25...

Anyone have any advice for what to go for, or not to go for...?

You know, if you use your phone a lot, but fancy PAYG, check out 3's new system. £25 a month gets you 500 minutes anytime anynetwork.

But if you dont use all 500 minutes, you lose them in 30 days and have to stick another £25 on.

Phones are still shit too, but surely you should be able to take the sim out, whack it in your old 2g phone, and fall back onto O2's 2G network, claiming all the while that you never get 3G coverage?

But my phone is a p800 - just as big

Seriously though, lets focus on me. I'm currently with Voda, £30 a month, bit pricey but I'm happy with it. I've had my phone a year now so can upgrade - what do you reccomend? I dont mind paying up to £100, dont want much more. I want a cool phone with a decent camera (flash in any of them?), quite small (want a change after p800!) that interacts well with pc preferably. Any ideas? I like the 6600 (well I like what it does) but a few too many people seem to have that.

Ok, well, the new P910 is coming out soon. Outstanding phone, including Blackberrys new e-mail system which is the best in the world. Camera is ok, but doesnt have a flash. Similar size to the P800 though.

From what you've said you're after, I'd recommend the SE K700i. Screen quality is outstanding, camera is exceptional, has a flash, does video. Its Sony Ericsson, thus using the same connectors as your P800, so whack the software in and interfacing it with your PC shouldnt be a problem at all. If you're anywhere near London, you can come and see me for the upgrade if you like and I'll see what I can do, may be able to get you on a 6 months half price line rental jobbie or something, dunno but if you want to pm me your number I can definately look into it for you.

on the subject of the K700, i've been looking at getting one on the O2 online 100 deal for free instead of the secondhand 7650. is this a good idea? would i be better off with a nokia 6230? or a mystery third option?

I use a 6230 and it is a lovely lovely phone, but it is extremely error prone, I'd wait for the 6230i if I was getting one now. However, I do love the K700 too, the choice really depends on if you're going to use the mp3 player function on both of them. The K700i has 40 meg onboard memory, period, doesnt take memory cards so when you run out, you run out. But with the 6230 you can can MMC cards to expand that to 128/256/512 etc so you can get shitloads of mp3s on them.

Both have their merits, screen and camera are better on the K700. 6230 is from Nokia so obviously the menu is a shitload easier to navigate. If you're not trapped by the Nokia menu like I am, I would suggest getting the K700.

i think i'm sold on the 6230.

next question: the online 100 deal with o2 seems pretty much what i'm looking for, and the phone is free with it. can you think of any better deals for it? (don't care which network)

Must admit, I use O2 as my personal line. 500 texts and 100 minutes isnt bad. Couple of possible drawbacks to O2 online though, you're dealing only with O2 online, not O2 shops, if you have a problem, you have to phone the premium rate customer services number. So unless you have a work phone you can phone there premium rate customer services number from, contacting them with a problem could get quite expensive.

As I said, you may want to hold out for the 6230i, not sure when it'll be released or how much it will cost, but they're promising better screen, 1 megapixel camera, etc. But, I do use the 6230 myself I'm more than happy with it.

Ok, the Samsung E800/810/820, looks nice. Shame its shit. Avoid.

As for the 7610, its another 'wacky' Nokia design, where 'wacky' translates into general english as 'annoying toss' - Funny shaped keypad, isnt that a great idea, lets make it even harder for people to text message. Just like the 6600, the phone is absolutely swimming in features, but its let down by a menu system that tries to be something its not, and a stupid ****ing design.
